As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs.

Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor).

The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina.

This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices.

As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

This is piano solo arrangement of the worship song I Set My Hope On Jesus. This beautiful hymn of hope amid doubt makes a fresh new addition to a church or wedding prelude. The first 3-4 pages are firmly in the intermediate range but it gets progressively more moderately advanced. This arrangment follows the form of the Getty's recording but is not a transcription of the recording. Rather, the intro and interludes are peppered with references to the old hymn 'My Faith Has Found A Resting Place' and there are some alternate harmonies in the 3rd verse. There are 3 different lengths to the arrangement, see the first page of music for the specific performance details. 3 transpositions included: A, Bb (original key), & C. Run time is approx 4:08 but it depends on which performance options are taken.

Setting both English and German texts, Sure of the Sky, Sure of the Sun – Des Himmels sicher, der Sonne sicher is a haunting and moving reflection on the futility of war.  The 5-minute piece for SATB choir and brass was premiered at one of the UK’s three main World War I centenary commemoration events on August 4, 2014. It was launched by the London Symphony Chorus, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Chor and Coldstream Guards, at a twilight event attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and a number of world leaders, all gathered together in the tiny woodland cemetery of St Symphorien near Mons, Belgium – the resting place for the first and last British, and the last Commonwealth, soldiers to die on the Western Front.

The texts are “May, 1915†by Charlotte Mew (1869-1928) and “To a Missing Friend†by Goldfeld, a German Jewish soldier killed in action, the poem was discovered by Jewish military historian, Peter C Appelbaum. Duration: 5:00

The title of Dandelion Wind comes from watching the white seeds blow off of a dandelion head in a strong breeze.  Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below.  This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.

Although two marimbas were used in the sound file, the piece works equally well with vibraphones, xylophones, or a vibe/xylo/marimba mix.  It has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it comes in at just over 1:30 if played at the minimum suggested tempo.  It's a great choice for your percussion ensemble or to showcase a pair of mallet players in your program.  The piece only requires one mallet per hand.

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible.
