This is a meditative arrangement of a well known Norwegian hymn. The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being also expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.

In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services. 

The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:

I know a castle in heaven above, shining as bright as the sun; you'll find no sin nor sorrow there, and never a tear is shed.

I am a weary traveller; may my path lead me from here to my Father's land; God, bless me on my way.

We thank you for eternity God the Father, one in three. For you are gentle and mild to us in Jesus Christ! Amen.

Note to performers:

The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for all brass musicians!

The title of Dandelion Wind comes from watching the white seeds blow off of a dandelion head in a strong breeze. Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below. This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.

Dandelion Wind has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it comes in at just over 1:30 if played at the suggested tempo.  It's written as a flute duet with no piano accompaniment.

This duet is a Meditation for Oboe and Cello. The current media call this style of music Spiritual Minimalism. This particular composition utilizes the centering 'ah' of Buddhism, the meditative resting periods of Zen, the plainchant of Christianity, the minimalism of New Age, and more. My inspiration for the melodic line is the 3 main words in the traditional Ave Maria text; Ave (Hail) higher in the staff for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-staff for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the staff for humility. The melodic range for Oboe is thus quite large - a full two octaves, from Bb above the staff to Middle C. The cello accompaniment is the same in every bar of the entire piece; a circling minimalist 2 chord broken triad ostinato. Whether for personal meditation or public performance, this piece will relax, focus, and recharge all who perform it and hear it. 2 pages; 3:00 minutes (presented in a condensed single staff score with the Cello part notated in the introduction then the score switches to the Oboe part with instructions for the Cello to repeat that measure for the remainder of the song. 2 copies provided in download.).

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible.

The lyrics quote only the first 3 phrases of the traditional Ave Maria text. These 6 words are in common across most usages regardless of region or religion or purpose and impart a broader blessing. These 6 words are interspersed throughout the piece with the Ave (Hail) high in the range for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-range for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the range for humility.
The vocal range of the song is thus quite large - a full two octaves. The High version goes from a B flat below the Treble Staff to an A flat above the Treble Staff. The Low version (a third lower) goes from a low G to a high F.
The accompaniment is a circling minimalist 2 chord ostinato for the entire piece.
Whether for personal meditation or public performance, this piece will relax, focus, and recharge all who perform it and hear it.
