Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II. Christina Rosetti wrote the poem in 1849 at the age of 19; it may seem sad to be contemplating one’s own demise so early in life but in Victorian Britain death at that age was not so unusual. The poem expresses two things: there is the firm wish that her loved one should remember her, permanently – but not to an excessive degree; he should not feel guilty if he forgets her - ‘for a while’.    The poem is not strictly gender-specific and could be sung, an octave lower, by a baritone. But bearing in mind the author and the feel of it, it is set here for mezzo-soprano.     The attached sample sound track, in order to include the start of the voice, begins at Bar10 of the string quartet’s introduction. This song is also available set for voice and keyboard.

The tonality shimmers like the desert sun as it vacillates between octatonic and major/minor; it stays in major, sometimes with added sixths and fourths, as the elephants recall the good times, when they could enjoy shade and pools of water, but resumes the octatonic shimmering as they continue to trudge, albeit hopefully and with happy memories, through the hot desert sun.
