Des Baches Weigenlied (The Brook’s Lullaby)This is the final song in Die Schöne Mullerin, and is a lullaby for the travelling miller as he drowns himself in the brook that he followed throughout his journey. The girl he was serenading in Morgengruss did not return his feelings and eventually fell in love with a hunter instead, which is why the miller chooses to commit suicide at the end of the story. Written in strophic form, this song is very repetitive and should be performed in a hypnotic and stately manner, in order to conjure up the image of the gently flowing water rocking the protagonist into an eternal sleep. Des Baches Wiegenlied serves the same role as Der Leiermann, and while they both provide a very bleak conclusion to a song cycle, Des Baches Wiegenlied should create a mood of peaceful sadness and sorrow, rather than the dark desolation of its Winterreise counterpart; it is, after all, a lullaby.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over Río de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dʒ] sound and llanto begins with the [ʒ] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. From twelve year old composer Faith Angelina off her debut album Reaching 12 (available at FaithAngelina.com).  This song was a turning point for me as I looked for help from my destructive feelings and found the love and support that was always within my reach.  - Faith Angelina It was August 8th, 2016, when Faith’s mother found the suicide note left on her minivan.  It was a heart stopping moment.  The type that slows down time and changes all priorities and perspectives.  On the front side of the paper it said, PLEASE READ in big letters.  On the back was the following… Dear Mom, I am writing this to inform you about something I didn’t have the strength to tell you in person.  I have depression.  I know you think that we all go through a stage where we are sad it’s true, but this is not the case.  I thought that I just had a sad time too until I realized I had been thinking about killing myself many times.  I know that this is hard to hear but I felt it was important to tell you something I had been holding back for 5 years.  I hope you can think of me the same after this note, and know that me thinking about killing myself is NOT your fault. Love,  Faith   After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body.  She had been waking up in the middle of the night over half of her young life and wandering around while the rest of the family slept.  With a small prescription, and lots of love, Faith headed off to start middle school and a magical year that would follow. Shortly after this experience, Faith composed a new song called Finding Hope and finished up on three others she had been working on.

This most frequently played orchestral work by Aribert Reimann quotes from and makes use of Robert Schumann's last finished composition, the so-called 'Geistervariationen' [Ghost Variations] in E flat major for piano from 1854, composed shortly before Schumann's suicide attempt. Reflecting on Schumann's subsequent life in Endenich, Reimann leaves the lyrical character of the original unchanged. But the breaking up of the theme into the third, fifth and seventh fragments symbolizes the transition from dreamy imagination to sickly brooding.

Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939403).  American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
