1st F Horn. Composed by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. Arranged by Douglas E. Wagner. Instructional. Part. 1 pages. Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music #00-PC-0016224_H1. Published by Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music (AX.00-PC-0016224_H1).

UPC: 038081453095.

With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), by songwriting team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s---and even more so today, or so says the more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the Wonkavator music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heartwarming. Composed by Mike Strand. Concert,Jazz. Score and parts. 4 pages. Michael M. Strand #5795683. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970760).

Here’s a swing tune lead sheet, with lyrics, chord symbols, and guitar fret boards, for a jazz group, large or small, with a singer.  It’s a solid foundation for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.

The audio file is a swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with the melody from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, you hear a baritone saxophone in place of the singer, and an electric guitar for the instrumental sections.

The lyrics express frustration with white bigotry toward people with dark skin, and how that brand of racism surfaces in acts of police brutality. The lyrics pose both practical and ideal solutions.

Here are the lyrics:

For Way Too Long

For way too long, dark skin has been called blight,

And just to breathe, black folks have had to fight.

Civil rights laws are there; it’s only fair, we give them real bite.

(Instrumental)

Civil rights laws are there; it’s only fair, we give them real bite.

For way too long, bad cops have broken rules,

While their good partners get put down by them as fools.

But now we all may see the fall of bigots using blacks as tools.

(Instrumental)

But now we all may see the fall of bigots using blacks as tools.

For way too long, cold hearts remain unchanged.

But with strong rules, constraints can be arranged.

Enforcing laws need not be cause for folks to be estranged.

Lord, may our hearts be changed!

Asian Symmetries                                                                      by Dan Heslink

Asian Symmetries is a fanciful work which draws loosely from the musical procedures and sonic preferences of Indonesian and other Asian musical styles.  It is scored for three percussionists, each with their own battery of instruments. Gamelan-like impressions might be inferred from the cyclical nature of its rhythm, using metal plates like cymbals and gongs to mark large units of rhythmic time. Also evocative are the faster moving elaborations and a preponderance of metallophones in the instrumentation.

The work is medium to difficult in its demands. There are quick changes of instrument, planned to be manageable but requiring some attention to logistics  Each player’s performance station must remain stationary, with all instruments in reach without moving the performer’s position. Percussion I and Percussion III players must set up next to each other so that they may share the tenor drum. A selection of mallets that allows different striking surfaces to sound good without undue picking up and setting down of mallets is suggested.

Changes of meter and tempo occur, and an odd meter section sporting measures in 12/8, 6/8, 11/8 may require some additional attention. The instrumentation is selected to approximate Asian sounds with common western instruments. Performance time is 6:28. The composer, Dan Heslink, can be reached at dan@dheslink.com.

Program notes:

Three Impressions of Northern Arizona

for flute (or violin) and piano

The three movements of this piece were composed in the summer of 2007 for Emily McKay, flute and Rita Borden, piano. I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

Last Dance

arranged for flute quintet ( 3 c flutes, alto flute in G, and c bass flute ) or small flute ensemble .

Sarah Mclachlan composed this Grammy and Juno award winning piece, and is from the Surfacing album, her biggest selling album to date.
This is such a simple, yet beautifully affective piece.
In my mind, like most of the music I enjoy, have images and pictures or scenes of dancers, or a dancer such a ballet dancer. This piece could be appropriately and well received performers and audience whether in a traditional music or concert program, wedding, anniversary, memorial service / memorial ceremony, church or other religious events, or any other performance bringing something more interesting, unique, and musically expressive to the audience.

Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 21st Century,Chamber,Historic,Patriotic,Pop. 38 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #1066374. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489511).

In 2022 the United States Air Force celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance since its creation in 1947.  The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year.  This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations.  “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another.  The lyrics are here:

In my youth, I knew a man
Who loved to talk about his history;
Unfolded his mystery!
He made me laugh about some things,
And we cried about some others,
And we prayed as we talked about his fallen brothers.

As I grew, I though a lot
About that man who told me stories—
His woes and his glories.
Something firm about his voice
Inspired my skill to make a choice,
To recall our defenders’ valiant sacrifice.

As I wanted to be like this man,
As I pondered and dreamed
Of becoming what I can,
I hoped to see the day, without delay,
To defend, like my friend!

When I took the oath,
I remembered that man!
How proud he would be
Of his brand new Airman!
I answered the call.
I’ll give it my all!
I will not falter!  I will not fail!
I’m a guardian of the tradition of honor!
Fly, fight, and win!

When I hold my little boy,
And think of freedoms he’ll enjoy,
I ponder his destiny.
Yes, it’s hard when I deploy!
But distance cannot destroy
What I love; what I fight so very hard to save!

Generations come and go.
I wish they all could know
How it feels to serve America.

The piece was difficult for the singers, but they practiced hard, and the USAF Heartland of America Band premiered it during an Independence Day concert tour in June and July 2022, including the grand patriotic concert at Mount Rushmore.

A casual comment from one of the singers lingered: “You write for singers like they’re horns!”  It is true that most of my compositional experience is with brass instruments.  This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition.  It is the way it was supposed to be all along!

Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global.  Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

Aegean Fire Magnus

My music always has a cinematographic attitude, as if it wants to follow a film that has not yet been created.  With this work, the listener could wander and experience life around a Greek island. In the beginning, a Greek dance unfolds that develops into a faint prayer; shortly after, a waltz as a distant memory surfaces. The first theme of the work reappears to end the work in a triumphal and frenzy happy fiesta. The idea of the work came after a suggestion by Panos Liaropoulos to compose a string quartet for the summer of 2015. ‘Aegean Fire’ had its premiere in Greece by L’Anima string quartet and shortly after in Boston in February 2016. The Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra under Francisco Noya presented the orchestral version ‘Aegean Fire Magnus’ in its American premiere in 2016 at Jordan Hall in Boston..
