Piano Solo - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1178488

Composed by Julián De La Chica. Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV. Score. 25 pages. Vagabundo Music Publishing #778453. Published by Vagabundo Music Publishing (A0.1178488).

The current pianistic postminimalism draws heavily from Ambient music, this is how it tries to build surfaces. We hear it in popular figures such as Max Richter, Hania Arani, Olafur Arnalds or Nils Frahm. In the Silencios Fatuos (2021) by Colombian composer Julián De La Chica, this search seems to find threads that weave with the phosphorescent and radioactive shadows left by the twentieth century, and to which we return when listening to the flashes of sonorities that refer us to Ryuichi Sakamoto or David Sylvian. In previous productions, such as the  Preludes Op. 8, and his Voyeuristic Images Op. 10, De La Chica's pianism shows a constant exploration and research. The composer-pianist urges within the parameters of the new simplicity, challenging himself in a kind of minimal eroticism.

In Silencios fatuos the artist gradually sheds his skins, confronting the very fatuity of postminimalism. And in this way, he seems to sprout abstaining from any violent rebellion, in a kind of superfluity, allowing the passage of time, building surfaces with curved lines that twist on themselves without noise, without groans, contemplating the absurd with an unsettling serenity.

Composed by D. M. Gardner. Concert. Score and parts. 25 pages. D. M. Gardner Music #481035. Published by D. M. Gardner Music (A0.799652).

This very popular piece has enjoyed performances across the country. Entre Nous was originally premiered in Omaha, Nebraska with the University of Nebraska Chamber Orchestra. Soon, Entre Nous made it's way to places such as Florida, Texas, and most recently, Iowa, where this newest revision was premiered. Entre Nous has faired well in competition and recital and is sure to be a great addition the repertoire of any chamber orchestra.

Entre Nous (between me and thee) is a conversation between a man and his God. It is a single movement, ternary composition, mirroring the Holy Trinity. Beginning in a solemn g minor, it quickly moves forward with an endless flow of eighth note counterpoint, emerging enchantingly into the flowing melancholy melody of the B section. The second A surfaces in a minor with a sudden new energy and direction, slipping into a deeply contemplative, ethereally enchanting ending.

Entre Nous is also a very unique and interesting piece, perhaps the reason for its popularity. Structurally, it turns upside-down a number of times, each line becoming the melody at some point. A very linear piece, melodic interweaving and predominance give Entre Nous a characteristic that can be best described as enchanting. Much of the melody being perceived is actually a combination of several lines of music at once, often in contrast to another melody or two beneath.

Premiere: University of Nebraska at Omaha - Chamber Orchestra - April 30, 1997

Difficulty: Moderate - A great piece for middle school or youth orchestras. Great for competition. Entre Nous has been performed for several competitions and a graduate audition at Florida State.

With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), by songwriting team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s---and even more so today, or so says the more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the Wonkavator music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heartwarming. Holiday Bolero for percussion ensemble                                                       arr. by Dan Heslink

This arrangement is available in two versions, a quintet for xylophone and four marimbas and a percussion ensemble octet for orchestra bells, vibes, 3 marimbas, snare drum, timpani and multiple percussion. These comments refer to the percussion ensemble arrangement.

While the term Bolero can be applied to a variety of slow-tempo Latin dances, for most orchestral performers the title will evoke the stirring rhythms of Ravel’s famous Bolero. Similarities include the driving 3/4 bolero rhythm, the building of tension over one long-range crescendo, and the climactic conclusion. The pitch content is based on O Holy Night, the well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847.

The difficulty level in terms of executing notes and rhythms is medium-easy. At the same time, the dynamic planning and control of the crescendo requires considerable musical judgment, particularly in the snare drum part. All of the keyboard parts require only two mallets per player, with the exception of the vibe part’s necessity of 3 or 4 mallets. There are no key changes, or mallet and hand independence. Pedaling on the vibes for the most part is suggested by the harmonic rhythm and is not notated. Setup of the general percussion part in the manner of a multiple percussion solo, where all playing surfaces are comfortably accessible.

Holiday Bolero is sure to be an audience pleaser during a winter concert, especially close to Christmas. It would serve equally well in a percussion recital or a church service. In church this work would be appropriate as special music or as an offertory. Duration is 2:52. The arranger, Dan Heslink, can be contacted at dan@dheslink.com.

ON THE KEYS (INMANENCIA III)
Chords that tremble because their notes trill, tremble, move fast to not perish, complex arpeggios rising and falling as sound blasts, brief but wide melodies, just three or four notes, dissonant, quasi solemn, apparent scales ascending, descend, without getting anywhere, textures at last with a static vocation, looking for its instant, its present... Every texture wants to stay. The horizontal occurs only because time passes, not because the sound aspires to happen, it seeks its moment by recreating itself, renouncing what will come for what it is, the transcendent for the immanent ...

On the Keys occurs from the instrument's keyboard. That title, a frequent indication in the current scores to return to the interpretation on the keyboard, is my way of protesting the over-exploitation of the interpretation of the harp and other surfaces of the piano, my way of being bold in this 21st century.

The work is dedicated to the italian maestro Cosimo Colazzo.
