Nearer, My God, to Thee is a 19th century hymn by Sarah Flower Adams which was allegedly the last song played on the RMS Titanic before the ship sank. The bandmaster of the rescue ship, the RMS Carpathia spoke with survivors who reported they had requested the Titanic bandmaster to play hymns. The hymn they most wanted to hear was Nearer, My God, to Thee.

About the composer: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. In addition to her contributions to the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday, she also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. As well as serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. This is a wonderful expression of praise based on an amazing story in the Bible.

In II Chronicles 20, word comes to King Jehoshaphat that three nations are coming to attack Jerusalem and the people of Judah.  After prayer, the Lord reveals to them what to do:  Don’t be afraid and don’t panic because of this huge army! For the battle is not yours, but God’s...You will not fight in this battle. Take your positions, stand, and watch the Lord deliver you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! Tomorrow march out toward them; the Lord is with you!

The people marched out the next day with choir of ministers leading the way ahead of the warriors.  This is the song they sang, Give thanks to the Lord, for his loyal love endures.

God caused the enemy to attack each other in confusion and they destroyed each other.  The Israelites just picked up the plunder!

The Scriptures tell us in II Chronicles 20,
22 When they began to shout and praise, the Lord suddenly attacked the Ammonites, Moabites, and men from Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.
 23 The Ammonites and Moabites attacked the men from Mount Seir and annihilated them. When they had finished off the men of Seir, they attacked and destroyed one another.
24 When the men of Judah arrived at the observation post overlooking the desert and looked at the huge army, they saw dead bodies on the ground; there were no survivors!
25 Jehoshaphat and his men went to gather the plunder; they found a huge amount of supplies, clothing, and valuable items. They carried away everything they could. There was so much plunder, it took them three days to haul it off.

The choir piece Our last words allows a number of silenced voices – facing execution – to come forward in emotional goodbyes, pleads for forgiveness, assurances of innocence and wise advices to the survivors. Yes, there is a hint of revolt against the eye-for-an-eyementality and retaliation, but maybe the piece deals mostly with our common ontological longing of condonation? Is there a divine grace for us all: sinners, victims and executioners?
Our last words is not completely a cappella. Thuds from four staffs is heard here and there as to emphasize the final words of a pilgrim; a percussive interpunction when life and death is about to be summed up, even echoes of the hammer-blows from the most famous crucifixion in history.

Prior to the 1990s, there was no unified theory on what caused the extinction of the
dinosaurs. Could it have been changes in the weather? Disease? Geological
change? Then came Dr. Walter Alvarez! Dr. Alvarez discovered a thin layer of the
mineral iridium found in sedimentary rocks that were roughly 65 million years old.
Knowing that iridium only comes from a meteor, he set out to find the source, a
crater in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico called Chicxulub. In 1991, Dr. Alvarez
wrote a book called T.Rex and the Crater of Doom, describing the scientific
journey to most widely accepted theory about the demise of the dinosaurs.
The Crater of Doom is inspired by this text. Although we think of the demise of the
dinosaurs as a singular event (In a geological sense, this is sort of true.), it really
occurred over thousands, and perhaps, millions of years. I wanted this piece to
depict these events. In four movements, played without a break, one can hear lead
up to the initial impact of the meteor strike, its aftermath, a lonely hunt by one of
the last survivors, and the sunset of the dinosaur era.

This is what I tried to capture in the music: great sorrow, futility and hopelessness.

Like an unkind remark turning beauty to hurt, the wind ransacks the pink blossom. A new tree starting out managed the first inch up and the first inch down; it was not to be the minority who make maturity. A leaf clings with all it has to the tree: Falling is painless.

Cycle of the Spheres honors those who lost loved ones in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The title reflects both the living earth upon which we live and the fortitude of humanity. The first movement depicts serenity interrupted by bombastic resemblances of earthquakes and tsunamis. The second movement was a hymn song for the souls of the dead and is called Ashes to Ashes as it represents a different cycle, one of death and rebirth. A song of redemption and hope for the survivors is the theme for the third and final movement Resiliency of the Spirit.

The tuneful lines are shared between all parts, varying texture, before an uplifting middle section in odd time. The original motif returns with thicker orchestration before a loud and thickly-scored climax.

A requiem for women's choir (four parts). The composition creates a mystical effect through its long phrases, immersing the listener in a reverent silence that invites remembrance of deceased loved ones, friends, and acquaintances, as well as tragic events. The requiem was created for the open-air theater production 'Bauernkrieg 1653' in commemoration of the armed conflict in Switzerland between the peasants and the authoritarian rule of the cities. The fact that the requiem was written for a women's choir expresses that often women are the ones who suffer the most as survivors.
