Commissioned by and is dedicated to trombonist Haim Avitsur. Throughout the work, the trombone is placed into a variety of different musical contexts—sometimes with bleakness and sometimes with warmth. The work begins with the tubular bells alone, presenting the principal musical material of the work. The strings enter with a suspended tapestry, through which the trombone plays its opening melodies. In this section, the trombone has a cantorial role—singing and interacting with the orchestra. These opening musical ideas are developed as the trumpet, horn, and clarinet join the trombone in soloistic roles. A signal gesture on the trumpet is heard once, interrupting the tapestry. When the signal is heard again, the music accelerates into the second section. The second section is fast and bell-like as the trombone sings excited lines through ringing masses of sound. Whirring figurations emerge in the winds and are picked up by the strings. The section
grows wilder until it climaxes in hammer chords. From this, the trumpet, bells, and trombone emerge—maintaining and propelling the energy of the
section. Gradually, the energy is released, leading into the third section. The third section is chorale-like, combining again suspended sounds in the strings with harmonic motion in the winds in brass. The trombone again plays a cantorial role. A build up of energy occurs at the end of this section, leading into the fourth and final section—the cadenza. The trombone bursts into the cadenza, not with a forceful shout, but with a whisper. The work winds down to its conclusion—without a loss of speed or energy, but rather by the increase of silence. Fr. Jim Chepponis was commissioned to write a festive setting of Psalm 19 for the dedication of Christ Cathedral in Orange County, CA, in 2019. The result is what we've come to expect from this veteran composer. The optional instrumentation for flute, oboe, brass quintet, percussion, organ, and strings is perfect for a festive liturgy but can also be pared down for other occasions. The alternate refrains and different sets of verses make it work at multiple liturgies at which Psalm 19 is appointed. Both assembly and choral writing is very singable. The icing on the cake is that it can be done in English, Spanish, or a combination of the two.

The ethereal opening and closing motifs, played on randomly-malleted suspended bells, suggest the mystery surrounding the beginning and ending of life. The music of the stanzas depicts the various stages of life as described in the hymn text. The third stanza is written for handchimes (optional) beneath a descant played with mallets on suspended bells. Mirroring the opening section, the piece grows softer until the final malleted chord. An optional hymn page for vocal soloist is included. If desired, the hymn text may be read by a narrator, beginning each stanza at the places indicated within the score.

This original composition opens with a haunting lyrical section employing LVs and fresh harmonies. An energetic and rhythmic middle section employing mallets and several techniques provides contrast before the return to the opening theme. Percussion instruments (snare drum, tom-toms, suspended cymbal, timpani and chime tree) add extra color to the sounds of the handbells, as well as increased rhythmic drive, but they are optional.  The percussion parts are included at the back of the full score.
