Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.898025 Composed by Gustav Mahler. Arranged by Tiziano de Felice. 20th Century. Score. 11 pages. Tiziano de Felice #3411679. Published by Tiziano de Felice (A0.898025). Piano transcription of the 3rd movement from Mahler's 1st SymphonyMahler’s 1st Symphony represents a gigantic narration of nature’s power, starting from its birth out of the inorganic up towards a grueling struggle between the good and the evil of all living beings. The 1st movement brings in fact the famous indication Wie ein Naturlaut (like a natural sound) which is rendered melodically with the interval of descending 4th (the interval symbol of man); the course of nature passes from brighter areas to darker ones but manages to flow into the 2nd movement, which is a decisive and sure triumph of life, a feeling ripe with flourishing and fruitfulness.  The 3rd movement is the moment in which the destructive and deadly aspect of nature appears more clear than ever, a movement showing what Freud called the Das Unheimlich which Mahler represents by inserting the melody of the song Frère Jacques (Brother John), repurposed in a minor key like a macabre and grotesque funeral march. This existential laceration will recompose itself in the 4h and last movement, in which the final struggle between the negative and the positive force of nature will take place. The transcription is of medium/advanced level, and it includes as much music as possible from Mahler's original score. It is also useful for study purposes at the piano if paired with the orchestral score.

Oboe Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018876 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 3 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6056061. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018876). Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1515502 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical. 90 pages. John Ivor Holland #1089856. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1515502). 'The Choral Symphony' is a large work by Gustav Holst for soprano soloist, chorus, and orchestra in a setting of unrelated verses by John Keats. Written in 1923–24, it was premiered in Leeds on October 7, 1925, with the second performance three weeks later in London, although not received as well, due to various circumstances. 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' is sometimes performed separately from the symphony (as is another movement ('Scherzo')) and the final entry from the oboe reflects the enigmatic and often debated closing lines of the poem: Beauty is truth, truth beauty—that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. This new arrangement for symphonic wind band has been created to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Holst - composed ten years after his famous suite 'The Planets', this piece immediately brings to mind his inventive use of harmony and would make a centrepiece contribution in a cathedral-based concert to allow all the notes to resonate fully.

Score and parts. 9 pages. Diego Marani #6676219. Published by Diego Marani (A0.529280). The Symphony No. 3 in D minor by Gustav Mahler was written in 1896, or maybe only completed in that year, but composed between 1893 and 1896. It is choral, his longest piece and is the longest symphony in the standard repertoire. It was voted one of the ten greatest symphonies of all time in a survey of conductors carried out by the BBC Music Magazine. The last movement (Chorale) in particular had a triumphant critical success. The Swiss critic William Ritter, in his review of the premiere given in 1902, said of the last movement: Perhaps the greatest Adagio written since Beethoven. This arrangement for brass quartet includes the following parts: Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Trombone or F Horn, Tuba.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1415152 Composed by L. v. Beethoven. Arranged by CBQarrangements. Classical. 46 pages. CBQarrangements #996887. Published by CBQarrangements (A0.1415152). Arrangement for Brass QuintetLudwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21, was dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is not known exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found to be from 1795. The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Joseph Haydn as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but nonetheless has characteristics that mark it uniquely as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi, as well as sudden shifts in tonal centers that were uncommon for traditional symphonic form and the prominent, more independent use of wind instruments.Approx run time 7m22s.

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1356636 Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary. 215 pages. Adrian Gagiu #941262. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1356636). The score, parts and vocal score of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale. The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's. The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. This vital, Dionysian frenzy (in strong contrast to the Apollonian, severe contemplation in the first movement) leads only to its exhaustion and to the disorientated, slow Trio: first, an almost atonal tenor monologue accompanied by harp (on verses from Dante's Purgatory), then a quotation from Beethoven's sketches for a planned overture on the B-A-C-H motif, followed by a fugal section on the same archetypal motif and again a tenor monologue (on verses from Eminescu's Satire No. 4), this time with organ accompaniment and more and more tortured until the choral exclamations and the final cymbal clash. The search seemed in vain, so the rhythmic fury of the scherzo returns, but in mirror, as minor modes replaced the major ones on the same material. The Finale (Larghetto-Allegro-Larghetto) was inspired by the last scene in Goethe's Faust, part 2. After a cryptic variation for choir a cappella, the full theme appears at last in the orchestra, setting a lyric, appeased mood and more diatonic harmonies, while it reconciles the introspection of the first movement and the emotional and vital aspects of the second, although occasional attempts are made to escape, striving more and more towards the ending (with four vocal soloists and chorus). The parenthetic structure of the finale is a holographic reflection of the general form of the whole symphony, alternating gentle, contemplative episodes with exuberant or majestic fugatos. Towards the ending, ecstatic, big, complex quartal chords suggest the limits of perception and language (on the final stanzas from Dante's Paradise), until the sonority becomes again more and more rarefied and the journey returns to its starting point from the first movement: the 'tuning' A's in the violins. Total duration: 54 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is the second movement.
