English.Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.

It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP100). 9 x 12 in inches.The Chamber Symphony dates from his New York period before he studied with the legendary Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) at the American Conservatory outside of Paris. Like other works from his early 20s, this piece exhibits an extraordinary grasp of structure and overall design within a tonal harmonic language. The unusual scoring (clarinet, bassoon, viola, trumpet, and piano), like so many other chamber pieces written between the two World Wars, shows the influence of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), who would later become a close friend of the young American. The Chamber Symphony was premiered on 7 May 1937 at the Federal Theater in New York City. Jacques Gordon conducted the WP A Ensemble. Evidently the group was under-rehearsed and Diamond was not happy the performance. Thinking that the fault lay with the composition itself, he consigned the score and parts to a trunk in the attic of the family home in Rochester where it remained for over fifty years. I ran across a reference to the Chamber Symphony in the early 1990s and telephoned David Diamond to ask if I could get a copy of it. Thus began a sporadic exchange of telephone calls and postcards over the next five years. Among other things, we discovered that his parents and my paternal grandmother had come from the same region of Ukraine. Eventually he tottered up to the attic and sent me a copy of the score, with his penciled corrections, and his original parts, which I photocopied and returned to him. I performed the piece with colleagues at Kansas State University and sent Diamond a copy of the recording. He was ecstatic with our performance and told me I wonder why I've suppressed it for all these years? I got to meet David Diamond in June 2000 and we discussed the possibility of trying to get the Chamber Symphony published. He averred that his regular publishers wouldn't be interested owing to the limited market for such a work. A year after David Diamond's death I began my venture into music publishing and contacted Sam Elliott, a close friend of the composer's who serves as the executor for his estate. Mr. Elliott was happy to hear that I wanted to publish the Piece through Prairie Dawg Press and gave his kind permission to do so. I hope that my colleagues will enjoy this work as much as I have and that it will receive frequent performances.

The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed.  I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat.  So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions.
