Sleeping Flowers is from the pianists album December that takes listeners on a journey from the rise of a new moon in September through the the New Year. Paul said, These introspective, tender, piano compositions have a minimal style of music reflecting the growing pains of a beautifully complex world. I'm alive because beating in my chest is the heart of of deceased man, thanks to organ donation. I understand that life is filled with irony, misconceptions, confusion, and yet darkness can't exist in the light. Our mortality is also filled with so much beauty, joy, serendipitous relationships. I want to capture all of these emotions in my music and hope it may will comfort and offer hope to listeners. Cardall's compositions have evolved in the two decades he's been recording piano music. His style and technique have evolved into a modern Classical style. He gives you a very strong grounding in his piano skills. Each composition has a concise structure, simple compositional techniques, manageable technical requirements and basic harmonies. Pieces are thought-provoking melodies, subtle and feature simple powerful string accompaniments. In addition, Cardall employs a minimalist approach that includes repetitive patterns or pulses, steady drones, consonant harmony, and reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units. Some refer to the music as classical crossover.

Written in 2016 into 2017, this piece is my musical painting of a particular scenario. In college, it isn't too uncommon that you may sleep through a class or two, but one unfortunate day I slept through so much of a school day that I woke up in the middle of my large ensemble rehearsal. While I try not to do this as best I can, it was one of the most peaceful days of my freshman year, and the best sleep I think I ever got, anyway.

Text painting abounds in this setting of a Dickinson poem concerning the brief time gifted to our human condition. To match the topic and brevity of the poem, the work itself isn’t long, lasting only one-and-a-half minutes. The accompaniment delicately yet persistently ticks away, slightly ahead of a second to emphasize the perception of time quickly passing by. The word “short� is always given an eighth duration followed by a rest in the chorus so that a quasi-staccato articulation is perceived with each occurrence. With its sensitive text setting, interesting harmonic palette, and atypical accompaniment, this work makes for unique concert programming. This work may be performed in conjunction with Look back on Time with kindly Eyes (43) to create a multi-movement setting titled Two Dickinson Poems on Time. Duration: 1:30.

Not just the creature gone, not just the tattered feathers, dry leaf pressed thin.
Not just the rendering from memory, not just the lost-list growing longer, a shape and hue from the field guide fled,
not just a name that meant a life, a syllable that once was teeming glory, one bright flurry shimmering the sun.
No. No. No. It’s one name gone from our happiness,
one breath lost from our respiration,
one thread frayed from our salvation,
one plank gone from the ark that carried us.

Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction� (2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

This brass choir arrangement set for an orchestral brass section of Coleridge-Taylor's Sea Drift captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in his original vocal octet setting of a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions for vocal SATB double choir here arranged for large brass ensemble, Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore. The arrangement is scored for an orchestral brass section of three B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, four horns , three trombones and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.

Conflicts result from differences in opinion, stresses in relationships, societal demands vs. moral convictions, and even tastes in trivial matters. Internal struggles happen. They often push a person into a very bad day. Ultimately, the aural painting of this work intends to portray the victory of one’s decision to conquer the struggle, musically portraying my adopted mantra: It's OK to have a bad day; don't let it turn into a bad week!.
