Recordings to reach the Billboard charts in 1941/42 were by Duke Ellington (#13) and by Benny Goodman (vocal by Peggy Lee) (#25). This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. The title of the 1979 film, starring Roy Scheider as a character strongly resembling choreographer/stage and film director Bob Fosse, is derived from the song.  Liza Minnelli recorded a single version in 1975 and has  also performed it many times in concert.
