Instrumental Duet,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402227 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Kamada, Mikio. Baroque. 19 pages. ACORDO Sheet Music #985434. Published by ACORDO Sheet Music (A0.1402227). Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is a famous piece for the organ. Surprisingly, it wasn't very popular when Bach was alive. It was first published in 1833 by Felix Mendelssohn in a collection called noch wenig bekannte Orgelcompositinen. Mendelssohn performed it in 1840, which made it more well-known. This piece is different from Bach's later works in style and composition; for example, the fugue is relatively simple. Music expert Peter Williams suggested in his 2003 book The Organ Music of J. S. Bach that it might have originally been written for solo violin. Following his idea, some people tried to adapt it for solo violin, with some versions in A minor based on his suggestion. While it's unsure if Williams' idea is correct, it implies that this piece might work well for string instruments. We decided to arrange it for a Violin and Viola Duet, trying to stay close to the original organ version. However, because of technical reasons, we had to remove some parts. Our first arrangement was liked at a small concert in 2022. During this, we realized that the music could be good for string ensembles. We also found that removing some notes made the remaining ones stand out, sometimes making a special beauty. This suggests that the music might have been meant for string instruments originally. We first planned to publish this arrangement in 2020, but we changed our minds. We wanted as many people as possible to enjoy this wonderful piece, so we decided to publish two versions. Version 1 is similar to the organ score, sounding familiar but being technically hard. In contrast, Version 2 skips some notes, making it easier technically. Players will still experience the unique beauty of string ensembles with intentional note removal. The choice between the two depends on what players prefer and their skill level. To help players understand better, we've used colored notes. Different colors show different voices, helping players know each instrument's role. In Version 2, green notes show parts where both instruments play the same thing. While these notes are optional, playing them will help synchronize the two parts.Turning pages can be hard because there aren't many rests. We suggest using a tablet or arranging music stands side by side with all six pages in a row. If that's not possible, we suggest connecting pages 1-3 and 4-6 horizontally with cardboard. Put pages 1-3 in front and 4-6 in the back. For specific instructions during the piece:- The Violin plays the Viola part in bar 74, shown by solid parentheses. Turn the page after playing the third beat of bar 75 and don't play the Violin part in bar 76 (marked with dashed brackets), as the Viola will play it.- The Viola turns the page right after playing bar 73. Instead of playing the part in dashed parentheses in bar 74 (which the Violin will play), play the Violin part of bar 75 (marked with actual parentheses).

Piano,Tuba - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548661 Composed by James Pierpont. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3408523. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548661). Jingle Bells arranged for tuba & piano. Easy & popular. Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. In many arrangements, sleigh bells are used to accentuate the rhythm during the song chorus.  Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Oboe,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549343 By Barry Manilow. By Bruce Johnston. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Rock. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3486699. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549343). Duration: ca. 3:00, score: 5 pages, solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages.Very famous song suitable for church, recital or nightclub. I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and made famous by Barry Manilow. Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976[2] after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975.[3] It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977.[3] Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976.[4]The original version was recorded by The Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with The Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album, Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by then teen-idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Bruce Johnston. Cassidy's version reached #11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year.[5]Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God,[2] and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in all of us. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson.[6]Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Wikipedia

Brass Ensemble Trombone,Trumpet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.814534 Composed by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Christmas,Instructional,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 12 pages. Regis Bookshar #6636623. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.814534). Brass Octet - Intermediate - Digital Download. This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (12 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single. In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Brass Octet, consisting of 4 Trumpets and 4 Trombones, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I'm certain that this wonderful arrangement of Silent Night will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Piano Quartet,String Ensemble - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548728 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3412023. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548728). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther. First verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 5 pg. piano part 2 pg. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics which are essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed compositions, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

Knut Olav Rygnestad #844518. Published by Knut Olav Rygnestad (A0.1250185). This morning your being wokeIn knowledge of your heart’s lossAs the night had no dreamsBut only a thousand falling stars. Then the richness of a busy daySeemed to you the work of evil witches.– Guðfinna Jónsdóttir from Hömrum (1899–1946)This quote, taken from the poem “The Golden Momentâ€, showcases some of Guðfinna’s writing’s distinct qualities: Profound sadness with a layer of beauty, and a juxtaposition of the mundane and the colloquial with grand imagery and the supernatural. Throughout her poetry we see these strong contrasts: A once-upon-a-lifetime moment that passes you by, but also the infinite beauty of a new-born baby. The wild Icelandic nature presented metaphorically like a protective Viking ship, but also great evil hiding under a sweet, romantic exterior. The life-long journey to a place of great beauty that was always inside you, yet also man’s desperate and futile attempts to bend a great mountain to their will. Her colourful and imaginative writing evokes the dramatic landscapes of her homeland in careful detail, as we’re presented with situations that carry both the great beauty and danger that the volcanic island holds.Guðfinna lived most of her life in Northern Iceland, working as a church musician and writing beautiful texts that unfortunately never made it outside of her native country during her lifetime. We get some small hints about her personal life through her poetry, such as the tragic and early death of her sister Hulda, who died from tuberculosis shortly after getting engaged. Helga Ragnars, being from the same town as Guðfinna and already familiar with her poetry, introduced Knut Rygnestad to it in 2019, after he expressed interest in writing settings of little-known poetry by women. The first two she sent were “Hið gullna augnablik†and “Tvær systurâ€, and Knut found these a joy to work with and quickly requested more, eventually leading to nine songs in total. With funding from Hljóðritasjóður Rannís and the Norwegian Arts Council, they were able to record and release these songs in 2023, and hope that this will help to make Guðfinna’s poetry reach a wider audience. This book contains sheet music for nine songs: Hið gullna augnablik Vöggubarnsins maÌl AÌfangastaður Tvær systur LjoÌssins knörr Hver ert þuÌ Mannsbarn Fjallið blaÌtt Mig dreymir enn

The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme.  Bach actually came up with the idea.  In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural.   Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C.   Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony.  The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati.  I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement.  Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin.    It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo.   Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15.  But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement.  In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter.   I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4.   It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement.   I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse.   The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz.  That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that  just repeating the same notes.  His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15.  The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad.  The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH.  Mine is a slow, evolving set of chord progressions that sounds like a dirge: gliding through the waters on a gondola in the canals of Venice on its way to Isola di San Michele.

Score and parts. 7 pages. Regis Bookshar #6632969. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.814530). Brass Quintet Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). Also, in addition to this version for a Brass Quinet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn and 2 Trombones, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles.
