The technical level is about Grade 3 (UK ABRSM) The range covers low F (only twice, and well prepared) to the F above the staff. The bassoon part makes considerable use of quarter note triplets and tied notes. The piece has long lyrical phrases, beginning in A minor/C major and ending in F major. It is ideal for developing a sustained tone. The piece is rewarding to perform and the piano part has been kept fairly straightforward throughout. It would make an excellent piece for a student recital.

Duration: 11 - 12 minutes, 18 pp. Description: In Korneitchouk's mischievously titled quasi-concerto for saxophone and orchestra, The Disqualification of Harry Semantix as Trial Juror for East County, the concept of Truth and Lie is explored musically, as well as metaphorically implying something deeper. The Truth (the opening theme after an introduction pieces it together) is slowly mutated into its opposite, the Lie -- upside down, backward, twice as long and strident (the closing theme just before the double cadenza at the end of the piece). The double cadenza, is in fact a cadenza for the saxophone played over a wild orchestral stretto -- a kind of orchestral cadenza -- both simultaneously intoning bits and pieces of either theme, and seems to ask: Can Truth coexist with its Lie? or perhaps, Can Truth exist without its Lie?The first incarnation of The Disqualification of Harry... (available on CD from Old King Cole Productions) appears as a duo for saxophone and piano and has only more recently been orchestrated. The composer tells us that the idea for this piece initially germinated from his own frustrations of having to serve jury duty and being disqualified as a potential juror for answering honestly during jury selection. Thanks, John. Make Believe It's Your First Time is a song written by Bob Morrison and Johnny Wilson. Originally recorded by Bobby Vinton, the song was twice recorded by Karen Carpenter, both as a solo act and as a member of the Carpenters. Between 1979 and 1980, Karen Carpenter went to New York to record a solo album with Phil Ramone as producer. Make Believe It's Your First Time was one of twenty songs recorded. This version was ultimately shelved until 1996, with the release of her eponymous album, Karen Carpenter. Karen's solo version is far more subdued with only a piano, bass and drums as her accompaniment. The Carpenters recorded a version of Make Believe It's Your First Time for their 1981 album Made in America. The song, like Karen's solo version, went unreleased in her lifetime and was not included on the album. After Karen's death in 1983, the song was placed on the Carpenters' next album, Voice of the Heart, and was released as a single. Richard Carpenter's arrangement uses far more instrumentation, adds a bridge written specifically for this version, key modulation during the last chorus, and the inclusion of background vocals.

To evoke an authentic Scottish sound, I’ve used the ‘Scotch Snap’ a lot. The ‘Scotch Snap’ is very typical for Scottish music and consists of an accented short note followed by a long note – you’ll see this twice in the first bar. Sometimes this is played very energetically – but in this piece it is more graceful and dreamy.

The title means pretzels in Russian and was inspired by the pretzel sellers by the railway station in Odessa. Jadow observed that the street-vendors were poverty-stricken and wrote the song as a lament. His trumpet concerto has even been handed down twice, i.e. also as part of a serenata. In the original version, this Concerto per il Clarino is written in D major. In 1967 Gábor Darvas published a score and orchestral parts in a version that is transposed a fifth lower which makes it easier for trumpet players to play it. This edition is complemented by the current piano reduction. Another solo part in B flat is added to the original solo part in C in order that the concerto can also be played on the more popular B flat trumpet. In addition, the piano reduction has been printed in a retransposed version in F major: This provides maximum flexibility, makes it possible to rehearse the piece at different levels of difficulty, and it is a valuable addition to the concert repertoire for trumpet.

Fingerings and placing brackets are inserted throughout. Playable on a 30-string lever harp or pedal harp and requires no lever changes.
