In this march a referee whistle is to be used. This whistle is to be used only twice in the first repeat. I recommend that the whistle blower should be a musician who is sitting so that when it will be the time to blow, he  should stand up, blow and raise a yellow card and point it up to the conductor. While in the second whistle blow raise a red card and obviously the conductor have to leave the band continue performing by itself. It is a joke  which should be very pleasant to the audience. This march could also be played while marching. The level is advanced beginners/ intermediate.

This arrangement is a great foray into chamber music for younger players. It also works alongside the same arrangement for other instruments (i.e. flute, trombone, etc).The music would be great for developing chamber music with younger players (though it is also a great set piece for older players as well...especially at a gig where a bunch of music is needed), possibly within a band program or a flute or oboe studio. In addition to learning to play in a small group with no conductor, there is ample opportunity for phrasing and extra musical development.

I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces popular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second oboe and clarinet after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Oboe. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!
