Published by Daniel Cueto (A0.876582). To write Tiento para un pensador, I found inspiration in an experience that I had many years ago, when I was a student in Dusseldorf, Germany. I was spending time one night with my friend Rafael Aguirre, a virtuoso classical guitarist, as he was casually playing through some of his repertoire. He asked me if I thought that it was possible to play a Baroque fugue - one of the most complex of musical genres - on the guitar. Before I had time to think about the question, he started playing his own arrangement of a fugue by J.S. Bach, talking me through it as the fugue theme appeared in different registers and the counterpoint got more and more intricate.The effectiveness and beauty of the contrapuntal sounds I experienced that night stayed with me. So in 2020, when I was invited to attend the Twisted Spruce Symposium and had a chance to compose my first piece for the guitar, I quickly decided that I would take up the challenge of writing my own fugue for the instrument. Looking to find a more specific context for the new work, I discovered the early Spanish genre of the tiento, essentially an early Hispanic form of the fugue. I came up with a melody which, I sensed, featured elements of that early style combined with a touch of Andean melancholy. As I composed, I strived to follow this basic affect throughout, letting the lines evolve organically as the piece seemed to engage in a long, continued search for its cultural and temporal identity.Para un pensador means for a thinker in Spanish. It is my homage to the intellectual guitarist, to the reflective and discerning performer of intricate contrapuntal music.I would like to extend special thanks to Nathan Fischer for producing this valuable edition of Tiento para un pensador.

As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.Why choose my arrangement?I have arranged the piano part to follow the original very closely, transposed into G Major, as I also want to be able to play it in gigs with my daughter who is a singer. As such I have made the piano part to lie under the fingers, making sure the clefs are easy to read. I have also included a ‘piano only’ score as it falls onto three pages, and is convenient for performing, as well as the two piano scores with each violin version.Some of the harmony is slightly changed, and I composed my own bridge passage with hints at the original. Also Adele sings a quite dissonant G in the melody, against the F sharps in some of the verses. Personally I love this, but it would need to be played subtly, and the clash is less obvious in the less dense sonority of a vocal part, so I have left this option open by notating the safer version, and suggesting the dissonance rather than the other way around. On the video is an example of both.I also include a bonus ‘Easy Violin’ Part that younger players will enjoy, or perhaps the pupils of those who buy the professional level arrangement. It requires some simple shifts in the Chorus and Bridge section. However, there are some places where an open ‘A’ could slip by unobtrusively in quaver passages too. Feel free to take as many bows as you need and don’t feel bound by my bowing suggestions. I have changed my mind many times! Just do what feels comfortable and enjoy it. Some places I have left out bowing altogether eg Bar 27 where you can experiment or discuss with your teacher.Adele sings the original at 72 bpm but I think you could certainly go as high as 76 bpm without losing that mournful quality, and it will help young players with their bowing.My Youtube Channel has many of my arrangements for String Quartet, recorded by the Worcestershire, UK ‘Capriccio Quartet’, as well as many songs for instrument and piano. In 1897 the great Polish composer Zygmund Noskowski composed four characteristic pieces for piano, each piece evoking a different spring flower. This Instrumental Quintet arrangement is of N'oubliez pas! from Fleurs du Printemps, Op 48 (Forget-me-nots, from Flowers of Spring).As the name implies, it is expressive and melancholy. I have added considerable markings of articulation and dynamics and phrasing to bring out this expressiveness. There are numerous themes as it weaves between major and minor keys (without changing key signature). The upper three parts carry the melody and countermelodies, while part four is a moving arpeggiated line, and part five simply anchors the chordal root. Clarinet 1 carries the main melody with a wide range. Trumpet has the upper countermelody while Clarinet 2 takes the lower countermelody. Part 4 is a challenge for French Horn. The Tuba part is rather predictable. There is a fairly wide range (nearly 2 octaves) required in all of the parts.  Accessible for the average player yet with enough markings and nuances to satisfy expert players with the results. Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! One of the soundtracks that I get asked to perform most regularly is Test Drive by John Powell. This is one of the earlier transcriptions I wrote, and I often use it as a piece to illustrate the difference between different organs. It’s quite useful to have one piece to use as a comparison point, so I post little videos of this wherever I’m playing to demonstrate how radically different the same piece of music can sound depending on the kind of instrument. For me, this piece feels like an instant serotonin boost. There is a great crescendo where you get to take the organ from relatively quiet to earth-shatteringly loud over the course of about 30 seconds, and I always say that playing that part feels a bit like flying a dragon! - Anna Lapwood

Nineteen ninety-eight marks the tenth anniversary of my plunge into the world of ballet. I continue to take classes three or four times a week. It's fun, athletic, and challenging. And I'm still working on the basic notion of spotting in my pirouettes ... So when Max Hobart of the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston agreed to premiere a new work of mine I knew it had to be a symphonic ballet. Coincidentally, I discovered that my favorite cartoonist, Edward Gorey, is also a balletomane. He lived in New York City between 1953 and 1986 and never missed a single performance of the New York City Ballet. Apparently his leaving New York to live permanently on Cape Cod was prompted by the death of George Balanchine in 1983. Among Edward Gorey's many books there is one, The Gilded Bat, about a young woman, Maud Splaytoe, and her adventures in the ballet world. She dies in the end when the plane she is in flies into a great, dark bird. Hmmm, I thought, The Gilded Bat would make a nice adagio movement. To complete the work, I found four other Gorey books that attracted me in mood and texture: The Nursery Frieze - dogs running across the edge of a nursery ceiling, barking out words whose sequence provides no sense or meaning, e.g., Archipelago, cardamon, obloquy, ignavia, samisen, bandages, wax, Gavelkind, ... ; The Raging Tide - a fantastical story about four creatures, Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump, who would not stop abusing each other; The Utter Zoo - an alphabet book of zoo animals of Edward Gorey's concoction, e.g., Ampoo, Boggerslosh, Crunk, Dawbis, Epitwee, ... ; and The Blue Aspic - a macabre story of a mad fan, Jasper Ankle, who stalks an opera diva, Ortenzia Caviglia.
