(A0.1022594). 'Re-Creation' Program Notes What is time, and where did it come from? These two questions consumed my thought process while writing Re-Creation. Upon completing the piece, I was no closer to answering those questions, but what I could answer became clear: could I write a piece in which time ceases to exist? In order to do this, I decided early on to throw out conventional notation that tends to restrict most performers. As my thought process evolved, I began contemplating the idea of juxtaposing the continuum of timelessness against the traditional view of time. Not only did this free me from the confines of a specific time, it opened up the entire spectrum of time, creating the possibility of infinity and the eternal existence of the continuity of time that invariably existed from the earliest sketches of this piece. The early sketches of this piece were written in my coastal Californian studio during the summer months of 2014, and because of this, Re-Creation represents not only a freedom of time, but also a sound world unique to California’s breathtaking coast. However, the impetus for this piece was the opening chapters of the book of Genesis, portraying the creation of the world in seven days. In this respect, the usage of three and seven play and important roll in the overall structure of this piece. Re-Creation was also inspired by a vacation I had taken a year before where I drove up the coast, stopping in small towns periodically, to collect poems from local authors. One collection of poems from Jeanie Greensfelder entitled, Biting the Apple, caught my attention. Reading through the poems, I began to realize that each poem was unique in that it marked a special time and place in the authors life, ultimately providing the reader with an autobiographical time capsule. The arch of the author’s life was thus on display for the world to read inevitably transforming her life, rather than her work, into the work of art. My hope for The Creation is that it portrays a snapshot of the Californian coast in which it was written, so that it can have a life of it’s own, free from the confines of it’s author and any concert hall it is performed in.

Published by John Murphy (A0.841183). My guitar arrangement of Spancil Hill includes notes, tab, chords, lyrics as well as an intro and patterns that serve to accompany the song. Spancil Hill continues to be a very popular Irish ballad with listeners and guitar players. I have included the chords so that you can use them as an easy accompaniment for a singer or other instrument such as recorder, violin or flute that takes the treble clef melody part. Use the Intro of this arrangement as a basis for the R.H. fingerstyle pattern for song accompaniment . Also weave in and out of picking melody and bass patterns with the guitar fills I include in the score to add interest to the accompaniment . Check out 'The Dubliners' version on YouTube and if you want to play along you just need to place the capo at the 5th fret on your guitar and play the same chords as in this arrangement. I also recorded the audio clip  with the capo on the guitar at the 5th fret. Listen to this intro to Spancil Hill and you will get a good idea how to accompany the song using a flat picking technique of plectrum picking out the bass notes interspersed with a  Down Down Up Down strum plectrum rhythm. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote some song-like, lyrical pieces, often movements in larger compositions for instrumental ensembles, the so called „Airs. This piece, the Air of the second movement of the Suite No.3 in D major, BWV 1068 is one of the most impressive master works ever written in the history of the human being.  The piece does not require virtuoso skills to perform and is appropriate for students or amateurs. Without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by a dedicated and very well rehearsed ensemble, it has always a very powerful effect on the audience. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events. In this arrangement for woodwind Quintet the bass is shared by the fagote and the horn as two independent voices that perform „as one. For a matter of study and comparison the original cello part is included in this work. It could be eventually used if the ensemble decides to double the original bass line with both the fagot and the horn.     I also could not resist not to interchange the role of the flute and the oboe on the „repetition : I have shortened some of the notes and used various interpretation symbols, accents and nuances, they are mere suggestions for an interpretation and are total absent on the original score. The use of the dot over the notes is called „staccato, it means in this case that the note is shortened to approximately half of its length.  Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file. At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed.  I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat.  So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

This is a 5.0 marimba arrangement of Pat Metheny's solo baritone guitar rendition of Last Train Home as recorded on the album, One Quiet Night. It is transposed up a minor third (to the key of Ab major from F major) in order to accommodate the lowest notes of the baritone guitar (A1) on the 5.0 marimba (C2). Perhaps someday someone will make a 5.3 octave version of this in Metheny's original key. During the pandemic, I have deliberately chosen to take a deeper look at some of the music that moves me deeply. When I was a kid my next neighbor, Bob Holt, happened to be the local college music professor. He introduced me to a lot of wonderful music, including Pat Metheny’s album “Still Life Talking,� which features the song, “Last Train Home.� In 2003, Metheny released a solo baritone guitar album, “One Quiet Night,� on which “Last Train Home� makes a re-appearance. I’ve always thought that this version of the tune would make a great marimba project.

In 1897 the great Polish composer Zygmund Noskowski composed four characteristic pieces for piano, each piece evoking a different spring flower. This Instrumental Quintet arrangement is of N'oubliez pas! from Fleurs du Printemps, Op 48 (Forget-me-nots, from Flowers of Spring).As the name implies, it is expressive and melancholy. I have added considerable markings of articulation and dynamics and phrasing to bring out this expressiveness. There are numerous themes as it weaves between major and minor keys (without changing key signature). The upper three parts carry the melody and countermelodies, while part four is a moving arpeggiated line, and part five simply anchors the chordal root. Clarinet 1 carries the main melody with a wide range. Trumpet has the upper countermelody while Clarinet 2 takes the lower countermelody. Part 4 is a challenge for French Horn. The Tuba part is rather predictable. There is a fairly wide range (nearly 2 octaves) required in all of the parts.  Accessible for the average player yet with enough markings and nuances to satisfy expert players with the results.
