Through the use of complex harmonies and shifting tonalities, Mussorgsky creates sonic paintings that are as diverse and varied as any works of art in a museum. He takes listeners on a journey through different landscapes and environments, ranging from pastoral settings to the depths of the underworld. In his famous suite, Pictures at an Exhibition, Mussorgsky gives each movement a title that references a painting, sculpture, or architectural feature from an art museum. The suite is composed in such a way that it captures the moods and emotions evoked by the artworks. From the bright and energetic Promenade to the somber and mysterious Catacombs, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition paints a vivid sonic landscape that brings the listener into the art museum.

By O.C. Smith. By Bobby Russell. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Country,Film/TV,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 5 pages. Timothy Stapay #997124. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1415388).

Here is a timeless country classic arranged for piano solo.  A song the whole family will love to sing.

Little Green Apples is a classic country song that was recorded by Glen Campbell in 1968.

It was written by Bobby Russell and became a major hit, reaching the top 40 charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The song’s popularity has endured over the years, and it remains a beloved classic in the country music genre.

Bobby Gentry sang this song in a wonderful duet with Glenn on his T.V. show.

[Verse 1]
Well, I wake up in the mornin' with my hair down in my eyes
And she says, Hi
And I hurry to the breakfast table while the kids are goin' off to school, Goodbye
And she reaches out and takes my hand
And squeezes it and says, How you feelin', Hon?
And I look across at smilin' lips that warms my heart
And I see my mornin' sun

[Pre-Chorus]
And if that's not lovin' me
Then all I've got to say

[Chorus]
God didn't make the little green apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime
There's no such thing as Dr. Suess
Disneyland and Mother Goose, no nursery rhyme
God didn't make the little green apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime
And when my self is feelin' low
I think about your face aglow and ease my mind

[Verse 2]
Sometimes I call him up knowin' he's busy
And ask if he could get away and meet me
Maybe grab a bite to eat
And he drops what he's doin' and hurries down to meet me
And I'm always late
He sits waitin' patiently and smiles when he first sees me
'Cause he's made that way

[Pre-Chorus]
And if that's not lovin' me
Then all I've got to say

[Chorus]
God didn't make the little green apples
And it don't snow in Indianapolis when the winter come
There's no such thing as make-believe
Puppy dogs and autumn leaves, no BB gun
God didn't make the little green apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime
And when my self is feelin' low
I think about your face aglow and ease my mind

Fragmentos, for Solo Flute.

Fragmentos or Fragments in English. The idea of the fragments is inserted in the work in two ways: first, by the initial motif, which appears fragmented and as it repeats itself, it takes shape, that is, it ceases to be small fragments to become a larger phrase; then the idea of the fragments is related to the fact that the piece has small interconnected sections. They are sections that at the same time have contrasting ideas and also have some elements in common that make them connected. So we could say that the piece is fragmented into small parts. There are five sections. The latter is a variation of the first.

The title comes from the very conception of the work: a series of short pieces as a free-form suite. In this work musicality is present in the foreground from beginning to end, overlaying itself in the presence of the important technique required of performers. In Divertimento the wide expressive range of the guitar is exploited, in this case amplified by the generous acoustic possibilities that the quartet makes available to the composer.

The six movements that consist begin with Toccata, which recalls the baroque namesake pieces with their fast scales that run over until they reach a strum climax. It is followed by Serenata, a piece of great expressiveness as a song. Behind it, Intermezzo takes place in a context of Impressionist sonorities. Scherzo-vals, as the name suggests, is a waltz written in a humorous tone that precedes Night, in which the insistent harmonic chords create a dreamlike and somewhat disturbing atmosphere. The fast-paced final Dance evokes with its irregular rhythm the folklore of other lands.

It is dedicated to Terpsícore Quartet.

The Search for Hope is a work for wind orchestra comprised of three distinct motifs that tell a story of looking for hope.  Beginning with a crisp and airy feeling, this intensive work gives us a sense of taking flight over a diverse human landscape in the time reflecting the global pandemic, and the ensuing personal struggles, economic problems and conflicts that continue to have lasting consequences for so many people in the world.

Opening with a “questioning phrase,” illustrated by using a rising minor third motif, the music develops into a more ominous melody that is carried by the bass instruments.  From that questioning phrase the music sharply transitions into a second motif where the music picks up the pace with its own distinctive phrase and musical features, suggesting a time of invasions and military clashes, while tugging and moving our emotions back and forth with a single impression, and raising the question:  Where is hope found?

With the final motif the tempo begins to slow and express a more tempered and solemn course of thought, punctuated by the higher brass that takes the lead in carrying the phrase of the music by using a descending minor third to carry the mood.  Allowing the music to reflect and express the vocal inflections used as when a mother gently speaks the name of her child with love and support—the very essence of hope.

I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work.

The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.

I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.

One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.

In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.

Mussorgsky is known for his ability to evoke vivid pictures through his music. He creates soundscapes that transport listeners to other places and times.
