Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and UK hit of 1983. Sting wrote the song in 1982 - I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. This famous song by the Police had its original guitar part played on a palm muted electric guitar but it works really well fingerpicked on an acoustic. There is a full explanation of the song's history and notes on how to play it included with the score, also separate parts for voice and guitar.
