It was recorded as a single by Frankie Valli. The song was among his biggest hits, earning a gold record and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week, stuck behind Windy by the Association. The song is a staple of television and film soundtracks, even being featured as part of the plot of some films, such as when the lead characters sing or arrange their own version of the song. The Valli version was also used by NASA as a wake-up song on the STS-126 Space Shuttle mission, to celebrate the wedding anniversary of astronaut Christopher Ferguson, one of the mission's crew members.

Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and UK hit of 1983. Sting wrote the song in 1982 - I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. This famous song by the Police had its original guitar part played on a palm muted electric guitar but it works really well fingerpicked on an acoustic.
