This may be the first string quartet arrangement of Bartok’s famous piano work Allegro Barbaro, as his music has only recently come into the public domain.  One of his first compositions for piano, written when he was 30 years old, Allegro Barbaro is a fast-paced and percussive piano work inspired by the melodies and harmonies of the Hungarian folk music that Bartok collected during his travels as an ethnomusicologist. One can also hear his early experimentation with bimodality and octatonic scales. This arrangement is based on both the published piano sheet music and Bartok’s own recorded performance of this work. His performance includes idiosyncrasies not included in the printed music and which have been incorporated in this arrangement. This is a great opener or an ideal encore for a string quartet concert.

Ravel liked Le Tombeau so much that he later orchestrated four of the dances, ending with Rigaudon. Arranged by accomplished violinist Ted Lucas, who has decades of string quartet experience, this lively dance is a perfect concert-opener or an ideal closer as an encore. This is the only piece in Le Tombeau where Ravel did not include a metronome marking, so it can be played at any spritely tempo you are comfortable with. Take a listen to part of it.

Her work included serving as a Worship Consultant at the World Council of Churches in Geneva. As a visiting professor in the USA, she translated hymns by the Methodist Charles Wesley. Simei left a lasting legacy in the worlds of music and theology.

SLIP JIG SHENANIGAN, for Piano Quartet (piano, violin, viola, cello) is a joyful, stylized jig in a form known in Ireland as a slip jig.  Almost all Irish jigs are in 6/8 meter, or three and three, as Irish musicians often say. But a slip jig is in 9/8 meter, or three and three and three, with specific jig dances to go with slip jigs. While members of your audience probably won't stand up and start dancing a jig, they almost certainly will smile, bob their heads, tap their feet, and maybe even clap.  SLIP JIG SHENANIGAN is less than two and a half minutes long, and as such, could be a great concert opener, or an encore.
