A piano arrangement of the traditional Christmas carol, “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.�  Rhythmically spirited, with unexpected harmonic elements at times.  The introduction uses motivic ideas from the melody, beginning with fragmented and syncopated figures, gradually building from one line in the left hand to thicker chordal textures.  The melody is then set in two variations, the first accompanied by motivic material from the introduction, and the second using an expanded range and chordal textures echoing the introduction.  Suitable for worship as prelude, offertory, or postlude.

This arrangement is also available in the key of D minor.

High Country Suite (2009) is a work in three movements for string quartet.  Hoedown a lively kick-up-your-heels movement containing cascading scales, measured tremolos, accented double-stops, and a syncopated fiddle motive.  The solemn Hymn Without Words begins with the cello playing the simple chorale-like theme alone.  In each of the three variations that follow, the theme is played by a different member of the quartet, accompanied by the other three.  Hilltop Gallop is in a rollicking 6/8 meter, with long-short-long patterns and melodic fragments characterized by dramatic leaps and arpeggios, punctuated by pizzicato chords.

Glory of the West was commissioned by Dr. Zach Buie and premiered at the College of Southern Idaho on March 3, 2020.  Dr. Buie requested a new work connected with or inspired by the Mountain West region.  The inspiration for this piece was the song MONTANA, which I first heard at a memorial service, a great favorite of the gentleman who had passed.  The song was composed in 1910 and later adopted as Montana's state song.  Glory of the West is in three sections.  The first, marked Rolling Along, conveys optimism and wide-open spaces.  The middle Adagio section features a descending stepwise melody followed by a soaring ascending line, reminiscent of melodic contours in the refrain of the song.  The final section, marked Playfully, begins with fragments of a lively and rhythmically irregular motive, and woven throughout are echoes of the ascending lines from the previous section.  The score contains the Piano and C Trumpet parts in concert pitch, and a part for B-flat Trumpet is provided as an alternate.

Kraus (1756-1792), a tune associated with the hymn text O Worship the King.  The arrangment opens with a festive, processional-like feel, with dotted rhythms and fanfare motives.  The melody appears in three contrasting variations, separated by recurring fanfare material.  The middle variation is in C Major.  Suitable for worship as prelude, offertory, or postlude.

A piano arrangement of the hymn melody STUTTGART by Christian F. Witt (1660-1716), a tune associated with the hymn text Jesus Calls Us o'er the Tumult.  The thematic material of this meditative arrangement consists of parallel ninth chords, which are also used to harmonize the melody.  The melody strictly adheres to F major, but there are some unexpected, non-diatonic harmonic progressions.  The easy 2-hand chord voicings are suitable for smaller hands.  Una corda is suggested if available.  Suitable for worship as prelude, Communion music, or offertory.
