Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Holiday,Wedding. Score and parts. 36 pages. Piper Publications #6536333. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811819).

This Trio Sonata was published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1733 in the third volume of his Tafelmusik. The original was scored for flute, violin, cello and continuo. By 1733 the use of the continuo playing from a figured bass supported by a cello was falling out of use. In this piece, the use of the cello as a solo instrument effectively made the inclusion of the continuo redundant. In making this arrangement for flute, clarinet & bassoon or cello I have not included the continuo. Without the continuo, the Trio - still firmly entrenched in the Baroque style - closely resembles the three part Inventions of Telemann’s contemporary, J. S. Bach or the three part flute sonatas in Eb and G minor originally attributed to him but now considered to be the work of his son C.P.E. Bach. A set of 6 Quatuors ou Trios by Telemann clearly makes the continuo part optional.

The arrangement is edited so that the style is true to the original. All edited phrasings (generally more suited to wind instruments) are shown using dashed lines. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics and none have been added. It is notable that Telemann developed his musical material throughout each movement and there are no repeated sections in this piece.

There are four movements, Adagio, Allegro, Dolce and Allegro. The three parts are intended for players of equal accomplishment to delight their audiences.

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Arranged by Sneakwood Editions. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 34 pages. Sneakwood Editions #4781043. Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.890768).

The Concert à 9 Parties, 50:1, features an eccentric instrumentation of flute (ordinary, or that at the octave [i.e. piccolo], or the two combined), alto chalumeau, oboe, two violins almost entirely in unison, viola, two concertante contrabasses, and continuo.

The work is in fact a three-movement symphony, as indicated by the original title that Telemann crossed out before he began composing: Grillen-Symphonie in the Italian, French, English, Scottish, and Polish styles. Although this title was rejected, along with the jumble of national idioms, it helps explain the music’s curiously tongue-in-cheek style (Grillen, as used in this sense, are whims) (From Music for a Mixed Taste: Style, Genre, and Meaning in Telemann’s by Steven Zohn)

Edition based on manuscript by Telemann: Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (D-B): Mus. ms. autogr. G. Ph. Telemann 3.

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Arranged by Sneakwood Editions. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 41 pages. Sneakwood Editions #4781035. Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.890767).

Edition based on Ms. D MÃœu, ms. 775

Score (20 pages) and Parts (friendly performance edition): Violino principale, Violin I, Violin II, Violin III, Viola, Violoncello and Harpsichord.

The Violin Concerto in A major (TWV 51:A4), which has come to light only fairly recently, does not take as its musical model the song of the nightingale (as in ‘La Bizarre’ [TWV 55:G2]) or of the goldfinch (Vivaldi), but the croaking of the common frog, also called ‘Reling’ in certain regions of Germany, whence the concerto’s subtitle. Nothing better could be expected of a composer who found inspiration even in crows and in the out-of-tune playing of village musicians! Although this concerto, which the manuscript attributes to Telemann, bears traces of his personal style, other features, such as the exceptionally high solo part, leave room for doubt. At a structurally important point in the first movement the soloist produces no more than a succession of repeated notes, ‘a-a, a-a’, which infect the other parts as well. Of course, this is the vowel that the frog croaks, given a distinctive tone-colour by use of the open A string and stopped D string. But worse is to come. In the second ritornello the orchestral violins ‘forget’ the beginning of their theme, whilst the cello inappropriately pushes its way into the foreground. The setting of the second movement (Adagio), probably a moonlit stretch of shallow water, then audibly inspires a pair of courting frogs to make sweet music together. We are given the opportunity to rejoice in their croaking offspring in the concluding Menuet and its rapid Double. This movement entirely dispenses with concertante sounds of nature and thereby betrays its origins in the suite, where it always takes its accustomed place in Telemann’s music. If we knew that a satirist was at work in this ‘Relinge’ Concerto, someone who was deliberately exhibiting all these deviations from good taste, then we could infer with some certainty that the composer is indeed Telemann. Since his own concertos ‘smack of France’ (as he puts it in his autobiography of 1718), we may most likely credit him with permitting his not at all ‘sullen old heart’ a little joke at the expense of the relevant concertos of a certain Italian composer… – Peter Huth (trans. Charles Johnston)

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Holiday,Wedding. 40 pages. Piper Publications #6533127. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811818).

This quartet is the second piece in the first of three sets of ‘Tafelmusik’ published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1763. The numbers of players required ranged from a single treble instrument with continuo (cello & harpsichord) to pairs of trumpets, horns and violins with string orchestra with continuo which provided the entertainment for the guests at the most important feasts.

The quartet was originally written for flute, oboe, violin and continuo and has been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet & bassoon. Some additional phrasings and dynamics have been added in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines and passages of music have been redistributed among the parts with some octave transposition to accommodate the range of the wind instruments.

There are three movements: Largo - Allegro - Largo, Vivace - Moderato - Vivace & Grave - Vivace. The quartet is suitable for advanced intermediate players and above.

The short Grave introduction to the final Vivace would have afforded the three treble instrument players a bar/measure each to perform a short improvised cadenza before the infectious romp of the final Vivace. (Rather like the present day introductions of the athletes before important competitions - the difference being that the 18th century musicians had already demonstrated their prowess.

Telemann clearly had very talented musicians available and provided them with music which was enjoyable to play for an appreciative audience of patrons to enjoy.

Your students will love playing this new arrangement for three violas of one of the first concertos every violist studies. Very few students have the opportunity to perform the work with orchestra. Keyboard accompaniment provides the melodic lines and harmonies, but it is not the same feeling as performing with a string ensemble. Hearing the individual parts adds to the ensemble experience. This arrangement for three violas is designed to provide this ensemble experience. It is intended for three students all working on the Telemann Concerto. The Viola I part is the solo viola part as it appears in the original, with bowings, fingerings and cadenzas provided by the arranger. The Viola II part consists mostly of the orchestra ripieno part, with the melody in tutti sections and contrapuntal lines with the Viola I part. The Viola III part is provides the bass line and includes melodic lines as well. By learning and playing all three parts, students become familiar with how the solo part relates to the orchestra. Students learn to listen more carefully to the orchestra lines, developing a better sense of ensemble. By playing all parts, students develop a more complete sense of the concertoA new approach to teaching the Telemann Concerto!

SKU: A0.811817

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Contemporary,Graduation,Standards. 56 pages. Piper Publications #6518927. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811817).

The Overture Suite was a form and style of music popular in the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The early suites consisted of sets of the popular dance movements at the time and would have been used to accompany dancing. The overture was a later addition - probably for more formal  occasions - and enabled the composer to show off his skill before the dancing began. Telemann developed the form over the first half of the 18th century composing suites for a wide variety of instrumental combinations from groups of wind instruments for outside events, solo instruments with string orchestra, to string quartet, which was the original version of Overture Burlesque and one of the first string quartets.

Instead of the usual dance titles, Telemann used characters associated with Scaramouche, a stock clown character - Harlequin the Joker, Columbine, Pierrot, Mezzetin en turc, the Narcissus of pantomime - and a pair of Menuets.  The suite would have been staged and the music played robustly to suit the characters as they danced. Players of intermediate standard and above will have fun playing this.

The suite is arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon to play as a concert piece or as an accompaniment to a stage performance.

The tempo indications are suggestions in parentheses ( ) as are the additional dynamic markings. Some additional cadential trills have been added without comment. All added slurs are shown with dashed lines with the exception of those in Menuet 2 which I feel are necessary because of the change from string to wind instruments. You are, of course, free to disagree.
