Dieses Stück habe ich 1949 komponiert mit dem Bestreben, den Begriff Sinfonik von der Vorstellung klassischer und romantischer Formen zu trennen. Der Hörer darf also hier nicht jene Elemente suchen wollen, die der Sinfonie des 19. Jahrhunderts eigen waren. Die Titel über den drei Teilen des Stücks haben keinen beschreibenden Charakter, sondern sind nur als Hinweise auf ihre musikalische Atmosphäre zu betrachten. Der 1. Teil beginnt mit einer Einleitung in ruhigem Zeitmaß, welcher eine lebhafte Passacaglia folgt, deren zweistimmige Bassfigur, zunächst vom Klavier vorgetragen, von Variation zu Variation durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen in höhere Lagen gezogen wird, bei gleichzeitigem und regelmäßigem Sich-Steigern des Tempos, bis sie zum Schluss durch die hohen Violinen hindurch in das Anfangszeitmaß einmündet. Der 2. Teil beginnt in der Schluss-Stimmung des ersten und wechselt dann in eine vorwiegend von Blechbläsern getragene Periode von erregten Signalen und Rufen, welchen ein ruhiges, auf gleichmäßiger Achtelbewegung liegendes Andantino folgt, in dem Holzbläser, Harfe und Vibraphon konzertieren. Dieses Andantino wird in zwei Hälften geteilt durch einen Hymnus der Streicher und Bläser. Die zweite Hälfte des Andantino gleitet in einen stillen und aphoristischen Epilog über. Der 3. Teil ist eine lebhaft bewegte Folge kleiner Gruppen und Kurzmotive, deren formale Herkunft sich jeweils aus den rhythmischen und spannungsmäßigen Gegebenheiten des Vorhergegangenen erklärt. Kurz vor der Stretta liegt noch eine ruhige Strecke: Ein von Glockeninstrumenten umspielter Kanon der Violoncelli und Violinen. - Hans Werner Henze.

A fast and tricky (and heavy!) 7/8 intro launches their first odd-time excursion before shifting into a quick and bouncy 12/8 for the reminder of the song. Alex locks in with some mighty power chords, jangly arpeggios and an absolutely diabolical solo. Utilizing a wah pedal and some tastily placed feedback he unleashes a beast of a solo, with some super fast shredding in between some truly tasty blues-inflected licks (both hallmarks of his early soloing style). The slap back delay effect used in several sections must be set to match the time of two eighth notes (or one quarter note) so be careful with that. See and hear this! Written for Tammy Evans Yonce in 2017, Partido Alto e Bembe for Solo Flute is a composition that explores two ostinatos or repeating rhythmic patterns, drawn from Brazilian Samba and Afro-Cuban music. The Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira popularized the Partido Alto rhythm (on a composition appropriately titled Partido Alto) on his 1979 album Touching You, Touching Me, with vocalist Flora Purim. Partido Alto has a combination of accented and unaccented rhythms lasting two measures, which can be performed at varying tempos and include playful improvisation. Similarly, the Bembe feel has roots in Afro-Cuban music and is often performed alongside other polyrhythms simultaneously.As a jazz percussionist, I experienced these rhythms up close on two trips to Brazil in 2005 and 2008. I was struck by the dynamism, openness, and spirit of these rhythms-much like the Brazilian culture. In addition to the playful ostinatos, this piece features some jazz harmonic structures, varying time signatures, and lots of room for the performer to have fun and bring out the expressive qualities of the flute.
