Composed by Martin J. Van Klompenberg. 21st Century,Classical. Score and part. 44 pages. Martin J. Van Klompenberg #1010798. Published by Martin J. Van Klompenberg (A0.1430123).

The Corpse Flower is not only one of the largest free-standing blossoming plants in the world, it also it also highly unique in that it requires 7 – 10 years to bloom for the first time. The plant must go through several germination cycles, moving through a single leaf phase multiple times prior to the first bloom.
This work tells the story of a corpse flower, beginning with the initial single leaf. This leaf returns to the corm, the 100-pound bulb from which the plant stems. When the bloom finally arrives, it can be as tall as ten feet tall, but only lasts about 48 hours until it begins to wilt. The withering can take much longer, as the bloom decays and the single leaf stage begins anew.

I had the good fortune to get to see a corpse flower in full bloom in the fall of 2020 (The cover art was taken from this flower), and the opportunity to see this marvel in person was the primary motivation behind writing this work.

This work was made possible by the following consortium of musicians:
Erin Webber, The University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas
Stephanie Carlson, Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky
Amy Collins, The University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida
Heather Killmeyer, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee
Theo-Hans Kuijvenhoven, Ridderkerk, Netherlands
Kelly McElrath Vaneman, Converse College, Spartanburg, SC

Composed by Nathaniel Cleophus Davis. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. 20th Century,Folk,Jazz,Ragtime. Individual part. 38 pages. Gordon Cherry #6304299. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792764).

Aaron Hettinga has arranged five fantastic Smears for Trombone and Piano by American composer Nathaniel Cleophus Davis. These Smears were very popular and cool to perform when they were composed over a century ago. Mr. Hettinga has combined all five of them into one collection. They are appropriate for a moderately advanced performers and are about 6 minutes in length each.

Here is an abridged description of them by Bass Trombonist Douglas Yeo.

African American trombonist, composer, and bandleader Nathaniel Cleophas Davis (also known as Nathan Davis) was born in Tennessee on August 14, 1888. By 1908, he had moved to Nashville where he directed the band at the Tennessee School for the Blind.

Among his musical compositions were five trombone features for band in ragtime style which included Oh, Slip It Man (1916), Mr. Trombonology (1917), and Miss Trombonism (1918). Upon returning from fighting in WWI, Nathaniel Davis continued writing ragtime trombone features including Master Trombone (1919) and a tribute to his wartime service in France, Trombone Francais (1921). Nathaniel Davis died in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 19, 1972, at the age of 84 and is buried in South View Cemetery, Atlanta.

Composed by Ben Dockery. Children,Contemporary,Jazz,Standards. Score. 42 pages. Ben Dockery #3539271. Published by Ben Dockery (A0.693021).

These twelve short pieces for piano were inspired by the sounds from my childhood, namely the musical themes from games played on eight-bit consoles like Nintendo. Whether or not you share such memories, I’m confident we can find common ground here; each piece attempts to see and hear the world from a child’s imaginative, wonder-filled perspective.

Composed by Alison Hanna. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. 5 pages. Ali Hanna #857154. Published by Ali Hanna (A0.1264297).

I wrote “The Impossible Standard†in honor of my sister, Gretchen Hanna. She’s someone who endured so much during her time at Tennessee Tech University, specifically during her struggle to change her major from Vocal Music Education to Vocal Music Performance. It took Gretchen three attempts to pass her Vocal Performance barrier, and she never gave up no matter what. She graduated in May of 2022 and I couldn’t be more proud. This piece symbolizes the low point of Gretchen’s first attempt all the way up to that moment of triumph and relief when she finally was able to change her major. It had its world premiere on July 9th, 2023 at the ICA ClarinetFest 2023 in Denver, Colorado, and was performed by the Tennessee Tech Clarinet Choir under the direction of Dr. Mark Cramer.

Composed by Paul Thurmond. New Age,Pop,Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 3 pages. Paul Thurmond #4969097. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828263).

Use: Prelude, Offertory, Communion

I have a nice view from my studio window on the second floor of my house. It overlooks our big backyard, some trees and brush, a couple of fields, and some small mountains in the distance. My studio is set up so that as I play I can look outside.

This year in Tennessee we’ve had more snow than normal. There have been many school closings. Even Tennessee Tech shut down at times, which hardly ever happens.

So I’ve had some opportunities to sit in my studio in the middle of the day, look out my window at the beautiful falling snow, and write music.

I began today’s piece a few weeks ago, during one of the largest snowfalls I’ve seen since I moved here from Wisconsin. I composed a few measures that I liked, couldn’t think of where to go next, and put it aside for a time. For the next few days I kept coming back to it, always liking what I had already written, but not able to add anything new.

Then we had another snowfall. This time I was able to finish the basic structure of the piece, but I got stuck when I started to polish it up.

A couple of days ago it snowed yet again, and I completed the work and recorded it.

Today is Saturday, and it’s not snowing as I write this. However, they’re predicting more snow on Monday, which is usually the day I edit my blog posts. [Last minute update: No snow on Monday, although we did get 2 inches of rain.]

Apparently, this piece owes its existence to frozen precipitation. I considered naming it Paean to the Snow Muses, but I think I’ll stick with my original title, February.
