La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) for four-part treble chorus and nature soundtrack by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP)

Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale

A setting of an excerpt of Río de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) by Alfonsina Storni (1938)

Copyright © 2020 Adrienne Inglis

Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.

Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina.

Río de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) lines 1-4 by Alfonsina Storni in the public domain

Ya casi el cielo te apretaba, ciego,

y sumergida una ciudad tenías

en tu cuerpo de grises heliotropos

neblivelado en su copón de llanto.

[The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city,

with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.]

Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over Río de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming.

The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020.

Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dʒ] sound and llanto begins with the [ʒ] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both.

Duration: 3:08

Link to video with soundtrack is available from the composer (http://adrienneinglis.com).

Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Pablo and Diana Donatti, Ãngeles Rodríguez Cadena, and Emilio Torres for their contributions to this project and to Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale for the generous commission.

Shelter in Place by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for mixed SSAATB chorus with nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson

a setting of Shelter in Place, a poem by Kim Stafford

Commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021

Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.

Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.

Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)

Long before pandemic prisoned us,

the trees knew how to guard their place

with roots and shade.

Moss found how to hug a stone for life.

Every stream knows how to move in place,

stay home and yet flow outward,

sending bounty far.

Now is our time to practice-

now to sing from balconies,

now send words of comfort

by any courier,

now to hoard lonesome generosity-

and then to shine in all directions like stars.

Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm.

The nature soundtrack features sounds of the Oregon forest, stream, and night sky.

Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Katherine FitzGibbon, Bailey Dean, Chris Clark-Johnson, Kim Stafford, and the Lewis & Clark College Community Chorale.

Hot off the press! Dramatic, almost operatic song for soprano and piano (with rattle and mallet) that brings to life the tragic story of two Coahuilteco sisters sold into slavery during the Spanish mission era in Texas

I am worth nothing (2022), a song for soprano and piano by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP)

Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Eternal Graffiti April 9, 2022, Austin, Texas

Program note: Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble and composed by Adrienne Inglis, I am worth nothing sets a stunning Coahuilteco/English poem by Texas poet Lisa Kay Adam. From the phrase PÄ«ntci nakÄmmam axÄm (I am worth nothing), Adam creates a vivid story of two young Coahuiltecan sisters and their encounters with newly arrived Spanish settlers and mission priests in the eighteenth century. Musically, the florid phrases and haunting modalities join with the sounds of drums and melancholic bells to paint a picture of exploitation, early death, and a lost way of life in the western gulf coastal plains.

Ideal for contemplative, Lenten, memorial services, easy/moderate for SATB (no divisi) with harp or keyboard

Darkness As Light is loosely based on a Venezuelan pasaje rhythm with modified Dorian modality typical of Andean mestizo music. Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24 occurs in the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time in Year A of the Common Lectionary.

Psalm 139: 7-12 Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Shades of Paisano is a transcription, by the composer, of four movements from Paisano Suite, an eight-movement work for orchestra.

Paisano is the name of a ranch, located in the central Texas hill country west of Austin, once the private retreat of Texas folklorist and writer J. Frank Dobie. Now owned by the University of Texas, the ranch has for many years been used as a residence for recipients of the prized Dobie Paisano Fellowship, awardedtwice annually to promising Texas writers.
Paisano Suite, originally scored for a small pit orchestra, was composed there in the fall of 1982 on a grant from the City of Austin for the Austin Ballet Theatre. The resulting ballet was produced in February, 1983 under the title Ballabile, with choreography by ABT artistic director Stanley Hall. The music was revised and re-orchestrated as a concert suite for full
orchestra in 2012 and renamed after the ranch where it was written. Four movements were chosen for this concert band transcription. 1. Scherzo  2. Fugue  3. Romanza   4. Finale

SPIRALS IN THE SKY, BY MARTHA HILL DUNCAN
FOR SOLO PIANO, LATE INTERMEDIATE, 21 PAGES
.....................................
In this whimsical marriage of astronomy and music, my husband,  astrophysicist, Dr. Martin Duncan and I have combined our talents to celebrate the beauty of the night sky and the magic of music. M.H. Duncan

Martha Hill Duncan
’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.
Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.
A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. To explore more of her music, please visit www.marthahillduncan.com

Dr. Martin Duncan was born in London, England and was raised in Montreal, Canada. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in his
parents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan†in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

By Dizzy Gillespie. By Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Jazz. Score and part. 12 pages. Keith Terrett #5899751. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.747029).

A great sounding arrangement of A Night in Tunisia arranged for Oboe & Piano, Horn players will love this!

A jazz solo is written out for you, if you wish you can improvise on the given chord symbols!

A Night in Tunisia is a musical composition written by Dizzy Gillespie around 1941–42, while Gillespie was playing with the Benny Carter band. It has become a jazz standard.

It is also known as Interlude. Gillespie called the tune Interlude and said some genius decided to call it 'Night in Tunisia'. He said the tune was composed at the piano at Kelly's Stables in New York. He gave Frank Paparelli co-writer credit in compensation for some unrelated transcription work, but Paparelli had nothing to do with the song. A Night in Tunisia was one of the signature pieces of Gillespie's bebop big band, and he also played it with his small groups. In January 2004, The Recording Academy added the 1946 Victor recording by Gillespie to the Grammy Hall of Fame.

On the album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1, Art Blakey introduced his 1954 cover version with this statement: At this time we'd like to play a tune [that] was written by the famous Dizzy Gillespie. I feel rather close to this tune because I was right there when he composed it in Texas on the bottom of a garbage can. The audience laughs, but Blakey responds, Seriously. The liner notes say, The Texas department of sanitation can take a low bow.

The complex ostinato bass line in the A section is notable for avoiding the standard walking bass pattern of straight quarter notes, and the use of oscillating half-step-up/half-step-down chord changes (using the Sub V, a tritone substitute chord for the dominant chord) gives the song a unique, mysterious feeling. The B section is notable for having an unresolved minor II-V, since the chord progression of the B section is taken from the B section of the standard Alone Together, causing the V chord to lead back into the Sub V of the A section.

Like many of Gillespie's tunes, it features a short written introduction and a brief interlude that occurs between solo sections - in this case, a twelve-bar sequence leading into a four-bar break for the next soloist.
