Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Chamber,Ragtime. 18 pages. RayThompsonMusic #886629. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1296413).

Arranged wind dectet(double wind quintet)/bass

Parade is a ballet with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau.

The ballet was composed 1916–1917 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The ballet premiered on Friday, May 18, 1917 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet.

This movement Ragtime also known as Rag-Time du Paquebot (Ragtime of the Packet Steamer/Steampacket) would later be adapted for piano solo, and attained considerable success as a separate piano piece.

It fits the wind dectet well, and should be played lightly.

Please check out  the rest of my Satie arrangements for varying instrument combinations :

3 Gymnopédies and 3 Gnossiennes. (Sold separately and as collections).

Composed by Jules Demersseman. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 25 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #37187. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532815).

Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The thème of this set of variations was probably originally written by the 19th century Flute Virtuosos Paul-Agricole Génin (although it may also be of traditional original) and was used as a subject for variations by such composers as Bosch, Liszt and Arban, among others. Demersseman wrote a number of versions of this work, including an orchestration for wind band.

Composer’s Notes

            In my parents' library there was an assortment of very old books that I used to leaf through while home for holidays.  One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest.  The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850.  Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates.  Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume.  I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered.  Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure.  Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed.  I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016.

The Poet's Pen

I was a useless reed; no cluster hung

My brow with purple grapes; no blossom flung

The coronet of crimson on my stem;

No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gem

of flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heath

Around my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreath

Robed me in silver: day and night I pined

On the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.

At length a poet found me.  From my side

He smoothed the pale and withered leaves, and dyed

My lips in Helicon.  From that high hour,

I spoke! my words were flame and living power!

All the wide wonders of the earth were mine;

Far as the surges roll, or sunbeams's shine;

Deep as earth's bosom hides the emerald;

High as the hills with thunder-clouds are palled;

And there was sweetness round me, that the dew

Had never wet so sweet on violets blue.

To me the mighty scepter was a wand;

The roar of nations pealed at my command.

To me the dungeon, sword, and scourge were vain,

I smote the smiter, and I broke the chain;

Or, towering o'er them all, without a plume

I pierced the purple air, the tempest's gloom,

Till blazed th'Olympian glories on my eye,

Stars, temples, thrones and gods--infinity.

SKU: ZY.DO-1546

Composed by Yorgos Nousis. Score. 9 pages. Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) #DO 1546. Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1546).

SIX PIECES OF JOY AND MELANCHOLY is a collection of short pieces with a more melodic and in some cases rhythmic character.
The pieces were composed individually for different occasions, but they work together somehow and offer the performer and the audience a roller-coaster sensation through the constant change of mood.
Danceuphoria is the opening piece, an uneven, powerful dance which immediately creates an uplifting mood.
Melodic Sorrow is a piece dedicated to the memory of my father, Konstantinos Nousis. It's one of the first pieces I wrote for guitar as a teenager. Here you can read an evolved version of that first piece which keeps the simplicity of the primary inspiration.
Lifeness is an ode to life piece full of rich colors, melodies and harmonies.
Meditation, originally written as the theme music for a Reiki Yoga YouTube channel, is a very slow and meditative piece with short melodic legato lines.
Hope evokes warmer feelings. A simplistic piece based on natural harmonies that calms and soothes us.
Finally, Cascading Waltz was chosen as the final piece, because it can be freely interpreted by any performer and gives the opportunity for diverse crescendos and accelerandos.

The pieces can complement the repertoire of young students as well as professional guitarists who seek a modern yet melodic approach to the guitar.

SKU: MQ.8492-11E

Composed by MeeAe Cecilia Nam and Theodore Gouvy. Instrument part. 8 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8492-11E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8492-11E).

French.

Gouvy was known for writing some of the most beautiful melodies of the Romantic period. His style is a combination of German forms and an early French romantic harmonic structure. His writing for the piano in the songs is totally unified in mood and description with the voice, just as the piano is in Schubert’s songs. The equal partnership of the vocal line and piano interact closely to bring the poetry vividly into life with unimaginable artistic heights and unbridled passion.
This volume includes Gouvy songs set to 18 poems of Philippe Desportes (1546–1606), and 18 poems of Moritz Hartmann (1821–1872). The elements of Romantic love poetry, such as enchanting love and its pain, and the personifying of nature, are fluently described with a great sensitivity in both voice and piano. Gouvy’s melody stir up the imagination because of his special treatment of words through a distinguishable and melodious vocal line, and his story telling and poetic treatment and development of the piano accompaniment. His compositional artistry places him in the upper echelons of art-song composers. One should note that Gouvy had a special fondness for the 16th Century poetry of La Pléiade (a group of Renaissance French poets, led by Pièrre de Ronsard (1524–1585). Desportes was truly the heir to Ronsard; however his work, when compared to that of Ronsard, is filled with greater abstraction and greater fluidity. Desportes seems to avoid any of the passionate anger that is occasionally characteristic of La Pléiade. This may be an indication that Desportes lived in a less distressed time. It also seems necessary to point out that he learned much in his early career by copying and studying the earlier works of La Pléiade. This has led some scholars to label him as a plagiarist, but it is important to realize that all the members of La Pléiade copied from each other when they wished to learn something new, and truly understand the style of the other poets in the group.
Gouvy’s only choice of poems from his contemporaries, were the works of Moritz Hartmann (1821–1872), a good friend of Gouvy’s. Much of his poetry was strongly political in support of freedom of the individual. He traveled to Leipzig in 1845, but when the authorities discovered a volume of patriotic poems entitled Kelch und Schwert (Chalice and Sword), he fled to Belgium and France. It is at this time that he possibly met Théodore Gouvy. Eighteen poems of Hartmann were translated from German to French by the French poet, Adolph Larmande, of whom very little is known.
Pierre Toussaint Adolphe Larmande seems to have been a rather obscure poet and musician. We know that he taught music theory at the Paris Conservatory at the same time Anton Reicha and Michele Carafa were on the faculty. We also know that in 1847 he married an English woman by the name of Marie Caroline Bradley. There are random documents, such as a Certificate of Arrival in London, England, in 1837, but there are no birth and death dates given, and that includes his obituary notice.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 3 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3025405. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.535383).

Eternitie is a poem by Robert Herrick, representing the sea. In the complete
Oratorio, this chorus is associated with Sankaty Bluff’ on Nantucket Island.
Because of its height, Sankaty Bluff’s view of the ocean is one of the island’s
most beautiful, showing well the sense of vast Eternitie that is the endless sea.

O Yeares! And Age! Farewell:
Behold I go,
Where I do know
Infinitie to dwell.

And these mine eyes shall see
All times, how they
Are lost i’th’Sea

Of vast Eternitie.
Where never moon shall sway
The Starres; but she,
And night, shall be.
Drown’d in one endlesse Day.

SKU: A0.534674

Composed by Paul Wehage. Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 21 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #6132007. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534674).

Four Sketches is written in a contrapunctal, extended-tonal style and is in four movements The first movement, Invention, uses canonic writing and imitative couterpoint. Valse Lente, is a slowly expressive waltz with the two instruments presenting the melody in the different sections. Berceuse begins as a soft cradlesong, but gradually the music becomes more expansive before returning to the first theme to end the movement quietly. The final Marche is a jaunty, stylized comic march in which the theme is passed between the two instruments. Passages involving hocketing underlined by articulation effects create rythmnic tension before the piece comes to a close.
