I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.

The song has been an international hit. This arrangement is just so that people who love the song can play it.  I will admit that it is repetitious, but it's just a catchy tune! Scored for clarinet choir - 3 Bb, alto, bass, and contrabass clarinets. If your choir doesn't have a contrabass, then it can be substituted by another bass, or any Bb instrument in a similar range, but it is a part that needs to be covered, as it has important (but quite simple) bass lines.  There are 2 body percussion parts that are quite simple, but particularly important.  It's a stomp and clap (or snap).  You could also use 2 different drums, buckets, etc.  Substitute a low pitch for the stomp and a higher one for the clap. Duration: 3 minutes.

Every artist who has ever entertained us with this classic Hoagy Carmichael creation has jumped right to the chase, that being the verse that begins with Geor - gia,..  Wikipedia refers to the missed component as, the commonly excised introductory verse.  Well, I took a good look at that introductory verse, and concluded that there was a pretty good reason nobody sang it.  It needed more work than the writers had put into it, in my opinion, which is a nice way of saying that it sucked.  So I fixed it, so to speak.  I believe that it stands up to scrutiny.The melody line throughout has some modifications in note lengths.  It is a piece originally written in cut time, which it isn't really, since it is always being sung in a moody fashion you don't normally expect to find written in 2/2 time.  I think maybe that Hoagy had a secret desire to write for movie musicals.I adapted the chord diagrams to make them more suitable for playing along with on the guitar.  This arrangement will appeal to anyone who has ever studied Mickey Baker's jazz guitar chords.  As I see it, every song is still a tune and should be fun to play.  Georgia is no exception.

The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon.                                                                                         As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends.
