The words, I want to be free are spoken in unison with the entire choir to describe that everyone feels this way at least once in their life. They all have been thrown into a cell that some call the heart, and they've lost the key. â€ƒThe last portion is the same as the beginning portion because the woman is remembering her husband in all of his glory. The last chord ends in major because she has had the epiphany that he lives on, within her memories.

While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies.
