Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet,E-Flat Clarinet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1171245 Composed by Christopher Tin and Emily Dickinson. Arranged by Lisa Ochoco. Contemporary,Film/TV. 21 pages. Lisa L Ochoco #771583. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.1171245). Christopher Tin is a contemporary composer who is best known for his choral piece called Baba Yetu.  With an impressive educational background in music composition, English literature, and art history, his compositions come to life with like nothing that I've experienced before. It is simply some of the most beautiful and expressive music I have ever heard.  The Lost Birds is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humans.  Tin’s soundtrack is a fantastic work of art, with its soaring musical phrases that make you feel like you’re flying.  The Saddest Noise is a choral piece, with its lyrics taken from Emily Dickinson’s poem, “The Saddest Noise, the Sweetest Noise,†which talks of the relationship between beauty and grief.   The saddest noise, the sweetest noise, The maddest noise that grows, The birds, they make it in the spring, At night’s delicious close.   Between the March and April line That magical frontier Beyond which summer hesitates, Almost too heavenly near.   It makes us think of all the dead That sauntered with us here, By separation’s sorcery Made cruelly more dear.   It makes us think of what we had, And what we now deplore. We almost wish those siren throats Would go and sing no more.   An ear can break a human heart As quickly as a spear, We wish the ear had not a heart So dangerously near.   The Lost Birds soundtrack was sung by the choral group, Voces8, who made the music and poetry come to life in a way that not many other groups could.  It is simply beautiful. This arrangement is scored for clarinet choir – 4 Bb, alto, bass, and contrabass.  There is an optional Eb part to play in addition to, or in lieu of, the 1st Bb part.  This is not a strict transcription - I added moving parts and changed/added notes to make it of more interest as an instrumental piece.  I hope you like it. Duration: 3.5 minutes.

The song is about a telephone lineman who is alone in his work and in his life, looking out at the vast landscape in search of something he cannot find. The melancholy and longing of the song is evocative of the loneliness that many people feel, especially in a society that can often feel disconnected and isolated. Webb's lyrics and Campbell's vocals combine to create a song that is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. It is a timeless song that captures the loneliness of many, and its enduring popularity over the years is a testament to its power.

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548654 Composed by James Pierpont. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3408171. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548654). Jingle Bells arranged for viola & piano featuring a fancy 3rd verse. Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. In many arrangements, sleigh bells are used to accentuate the rhythm during the song chorus.  Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1495477 By Damien Gauci. By Damien Gauci. Classical,Contemporary. Score. 36 pages. Damien Gauci #1071994. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1495477). This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

Piano Quartet,String Ensemble - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548728 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3412023. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548728). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther. First verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 5 pg. piano part 2 pg. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics which are essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed compositions, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1324800 By David Tsvariani. By David Tsvariani. Classical,Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. David Tsvariani #913009. Published by David Tsvariani (A0.1324800). Fugues Op. 17 for Piano by David TsvarianiIntroduction:Allow me to share a few thoughts about my recent composition, Fugues Op. 17, for piano. Comprising four individual fugues that can be performed separately or as a complete suite, this work explores a range of tempos, keys, and thematic nuances. I've endeavored to create a modest collection that, when performed together, offers a glimpse into various emotional landscapes.Fugue No. 1 in C Major (Allegro vivace):The journey begins with the lively Allegro vivace in C major, a modest 01:44 celebration of joy and energy. It is my hope that this piece, with its brisk tempo, serves as a lively opening to the collection, showcasing the pianist's skill and the intricate counterpoint I aimed to achieve.Fugue No. 2 in B-flat Major (Andante):The second fugue, marked Andante with a duration of 02:25, introduces a contemplative mood in the key of B-flat major. In my modest attempt, this piece invites the listener to reflect and explore a more introspective side, providing a gentle contrast to the preceding fugue.Fugue No. 3 in A Major (Adagio):With a deliberate pace of 02:57 and an Adagio tempo, the third fugue in A major emphasizes melody and expression. My humble intention was to create a serene and emotional landscape, allowing the listener to experience a deeper connection with the music.Fugue No. 4 in D Major (Allegretto):The final fugue, an Allegretto in D major, lasts a mere 01:40. In a departure from convention, I introduced an Eastern or oriental scale, aiming to infuse the composition with a unique character. It is my modest hope that this unexpected touch adds a distinctive flavor to the overall work.Program Notes:As I share Fugues Op. 17, I am mindful of the privilege of having my compositions interpreted by talented performers. My sincere aspiration was to create a humble collection that weaves together varied emotions and styles. The inclusion of a melodic third fugue and the exoticism of the fourth fugue seeks to expand the tonal palette modestly. I hope that, as a whole, this collection speaks with a quiet resonance, leaving room for interpretation and connection between the music, the performer, and the listener. With gratitude, David Tsvariani.

Brass Quintet Baritone Horn TC,Bass Trombone,Cornet,Euphonium,Flugelhorn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1321540 Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. 18 pages. RBMusic #910007. Published by RBMusic (A0.1321540). In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come. The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame. The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clef trombone/euphonium and tuba. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873027 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867219. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873027). At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed.  I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat.  So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

In The Summertime (score – vln, vla, cel) MO167AScore (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor10 pages - 6:00 minutes in length In The Summertime is comprised of two parts, with two distinct messages. The first speaks to the space of wonderment in our lives, where good friends and experiences surround us. A time spent looking forward to the continuing joy and merrymaking of the innocence and purpose that brought us together. We then travel to where agelessness ends, where innocence no longer lingers. The bitterness within a life that begins to be complicated where it wasn¹t before starts to overwhelm the sweetness on the tongue. Still, the B-section of the piece yearns backward and forward at the same time. Tugging at the memory of what came before to find and create meaning farther on.So many of us expect life to continue to deliver its many delights, without realizing that it was the innocence and freedom, the faith in the possible that created the delightful condition of youth. After a playful frolic with the instruments dancing about in the musical forest, the A and B parts return, reminding us that unlike time that moves ever forward, the journey back to the wonder and freedom of childhood awaits us all. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 2006 Composed by Mark O’ConnorThe accompanying MP3 is of Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz Trio (touring ensemble) with Becca Albers and Mike Block, performing live in 2007 at the Aspen Music Festival. Catalogue Number MO167ACopyright © 2006 by Mark O’Connor Music InternationalFor more information on violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, O’Connor String Camps, Touring Ensembles, Discography, Bio, Repertoire and more, please visitwww.markoconnor.com For information on the O’Connor Method – instructional book series for violin, viola, cello and school string orchestra programs:www.oconnormethod.com

Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.973048 Composed by Francis Kayali. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 19 pages. Francis Kayali #6230277. Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973048). The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

INTERVALS : 24 Works for Piano by Julie MandelA musician friend of mine once told me that her favorite songs were those that began with the jump of an octave. Like Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It got me to thinking about how the first two notes of any piece of music really set up what will follow. That octave jump, that interval, is only one of twenty-four possible intervals in a one-octave scale. That is to say, there are twenty-four different intervals with which to begin a piece of music. I have written these twenty-four pieces with the idea of having the first two notes of each of them start with a different interval.I’m delighted that pianists are starting to perform them in concert, and all 24 have been recorded by Hadassah Guttmann. The recording is widely available for purchase and download.Writing them has been like a series of adventures, each of which begins by taking the first two steps - and then discovering where they will lead. Published by The Donald Ashwander Estate (A0.1295715). Perdido Bay Moon Rag is a heartfelt and evocative solo piano composition dedicated to the memory of an elegant lady whose love for dance and a chance suggestion led to the creation of this beautiful piece. The composition pays homage to the serene beauty and cherished memories of Bear Point, Alabama, a place rich in history and personal significance to the composer, Donald Ashwander. The story behind Perdido Bay Moon Rag begins on a summer day when Donald, along with friends Edith and Edwin Zelnicker, found themselves on the picturesque Bear Point, Alabama. This tranquil peninsula on the shores of Perdido Bay held a special place in their hearts, as it was a locale where they had spent countless hours as children. They reminisced about their youth, playing beneath the majestic magnolia trees adorned with Spanish Moss and exploring ancient Indian mounds in search of pottery shards. It was during this nostalgic conversation that Edith, the elegant lady in question, suggested the title for a piano composition: Perdido Bay Moon Rag. Enchanted by the idea, Donald was determined to bring this vision to life. Upon returning to New York, he began crafting the piece, but it somehow eluded his grasp. Despite this initial challenge, he designed an appropriate cover for the composition and sent it to Edith and Edwin in Mobile.Over the years, Perdido Bay Moon Rag remained a fixture on Edith and Edwin's piano, a symbol of a cherished memory and unfulfilled promise. Edith confessed to her friend that she had attempted to play the piece but found it too complex, and so it remained unplayed.Time passed, and sadly, Edith fell ill. On a poignant visit to Mobile after Edith's passing, the atmosphere in their home was filled with her spirit. There, prominently displayed on the piano, lay Perdido Bay Moon Rag. In that moment, Donald knew that he needed to fulfill his promise and honor Edith's memory properly. With newfound determination and inspiration, Donald embarked on a journey to create a completely new composition that would capture the essence of Bear Point, Perdido Bay, and the moonlit nights they had cherished. This time, the music flowed effortlessly from his fingertips, as if guided by the memories and love he held for his dear friend.Perdido Bay Moon Rag is a testament to the enduring power of memories, friendship, and the creative process. It reflects the tranquility of Bear Point, the gentle sway of Spanish Moss, and the serenity of moonlit nights on the bay. Through its delicate melodies and intricate rhythms, the composition invites listeners to share in the deep emotions and fond recollections that inspired its creation. The final page of the sheet music contains special program notes by Donald Ashwander.

Published by Jenni Roditi (A0.1497861). Piano Duo 2 pianos/4 hands. Ritualise, Between the Octaves finally found its identity with the word ritualise. It began as announce, became pronounce, then declare and went as far a pontificate for a title. At that point I realised I was mocking my own music and needed to take it more seriously. Ritualise brought out a meaning to the music that I hadn’t wanted to admit to. It is quite folk-like, in a primal and entrancing kind of way. I can imagine a communal dance for some ceremonial purpose in this music with both public and private elements.Names of all the movements in the suite Between the Octaves in the right order are Initiate, Surrender, Thread, Curve, Encircle, Ritualise, Ignite. The whole suite follows a long line from movement 1 to movement 7. However, individual pieces are well suited to be played alone too. Piano Duo is ideally two Steinway grands, otherwise, whatever is available. An enjoyment of the tensions and relationships generated between the two instruments: grand-upright, upright-electronic keyboard is to be explored as a positive. Each piece creates its own world in the suite and can be part of smaller subgroups taken from the suite, in any combination, but the order of the pieces needs to be maintained if more than one is played. Here is a taste of the background to the musical world of this 53 minute compositional suite. During a reflective time I read the following: The whole philosophy of dharma art (Buddhist art) is that you don't try to be artistic, but you just approach objects as they are, and the message comes through automatically. (Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, from 'True Perception The Path of Dharma Art.' Shambhala 2008, p.133.) The 'objects as they are' became the 'octaves as they are'. As the pieces were composed the octaves had a centring and clarifying role that allowed other material to circulate around or play against them. They acted as pivots, repetitions, drones, ostinati, pointillist nodes, pedals, melodic features, struts, harmonic turnpikes, breathing spaces, bass lines: musical imperatives. The octaves called the musical shots most of the time. When the music pulled a semitone up or down and away from the octaves (as it did quite often) it was especially telling in the context of the ringing spaces the octaves were creating. I became interested in the subtle dislocation that two pianos could provide. By dislocation I mean a degree of tension between the natural acoustics of the two instruments in the room and the players idiosyncrasies as musicians.  The whole point of this work was to examine the nature of my syntax, grammar, and compositional thinking. The title demanded one thing above all: what notes am I going to use between these octaves?? My choice of notes was derived in most instances from the tempo, pitch, and rhythm of the initial octaves at the beginning of each piece alongside the individual word titles that I set out to explore as musical images. The audio was developed from Sibelius software, via MIDI to Logic samples of a Steinway grand piano.
