Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own� United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Free Lance was composed in 1906, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 64.

Chord symbals are included throughout for ensemble performance, and suggested us may be for prelude. Similar to hymn writing by the greats, Mark Hayes, Bill Wolaver, Mary McDonald, John Carter, Llyod Larson, and Larry Shackley in todays church pianist marketplace.

Commissioned by Ross Choral Society for the Ross 700 Festival in 1984 and first performed by them on November 10th 1984, St. Luke's Anthem was very well received. It was composed from sketches Gordon made while in Farnborough Hospital in 1965. It is scored for S.A.T.B. choir with 2 trumpets, 2 trombones and organ and lasts for about 7.5 minutes. St. Luke's Anthem is well within the scope of most amateur choirs and the instrumental parts are not technically demanding.Choir parts are available separately.

Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgar’s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike.The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) – Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) – Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) – Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento – Pomposo (2:00).
