Grim (A0.939390). The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

This tour de force work comes in two different versions, one for eight players (as arranged for SETREN), and this one for large ensembles of 16 or more players (as arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir). Each variation is essentially tonal, with some chromaticism and modality, and preserves the original harmonic structure of the theme. The final variation ventures further. The piece is not outwardly challenging or virtuosic, but does contain some complex voicing issues and innovative piano writing, both of which will require a thoughtful, sensitive pianistic touch.Duration c. 5 minutes.

Published by Rebecca de Bruin (A0.881169). This eight part choral arrangement of 'The water is wide' (to the tune O waly waly) was written in August 2013 for a university a cappella group. The melody is mainly in the soprano part, apart from verse 2 where it is taken by the tenors. The arrangement moves from a melody line (which could be sung by a soloist rather than all the sopranos) over 'do do' backing, to a polyphonic second verse, before moving into a homophonic structure with minor splits in the alto and tenor parts and finally full eight part harmony in the fourth verse.
