The Skye Boat Song, among the most popular of all Scottish folk tunes, deals with the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stewart) from Scotland to the Isle of Skye in 1746, after having been defeated on Culloden Moor by the English Army of King George II. The present setting, for either Tenor or Bass Trombone and Piano, is mostly lyrical and passes through a series of episodes that evoke watery images in various ways.  A stormy episode which superimposes a more martial tune (relying heavily on the familiar scotch snappy rhythm) against a variation of the original folk tune leads to brief quotations from Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture (the Isle of Skye is part of the group of islands known as the Hebrides) before a short recapitulation of the theme.

Miserere mei, Deus (Have Mercy on me, O God) is a setting of Psalm 51 written in the 1630's and most likely sung in the Sistine Chapel during Good Friday of Holy Week. It is a wonderful example of polyphony in five parts.This work, beautifully arranged for 5-part Trombone Choir (Ensemble) by Ralph Sauer, is about 5 minutes in length (with repeat) and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.There is a story that this work was heard twice by a young 14-year-old Mozart during a special visit to the Vatican with his father in 1770. He transcribed it perfectly from memory creating the first unauthorized copy (the Church wished to preserve its mystery and forbad copies, threatening excommunication). The very next year it was published in England.

This piece is a choral adaptation of an art song setting for soprano and piano of an original text in German contemplating the nature of the ever powerful ocean. The gentleman who wrote the original poetry did so in response to observing the waves breaking upon a rocky shoreline. There is an English text under the German that is a literal and exact translation of the original language and is so well worked out that the same exact music serves the text in both languages with syllabic stress and placement of words in the sentence. Thus it may be sung in either German or English with equal effect. This choral version is an enrichment of the vocal texture but with harmonic language derived from the original piano accompaniment. The piano accompaniment is identical to that of the art song and is somewhat challenging. The choral parts are not terribly difficult, but the difficulty is enhanced somewhat when sung in German. The constant ebb and flow of the sea as well as its power and majesty and mystery are evoked in this richly harmonic and strikingly melodic music.
