She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Turner’s The Sun Setting Through Vapour was my inspiration because of the different layers and zones of interest which influenced my composition’s structure. The central focus of the painting is the setting sun in the central background of the work. The reflection of the sun draws the eye into the foreground and the market scene in the front right zone. This created the first section of my composition, the idea of the sun setting through the vapour before revealing a market scene which then fades back into the atmospheric sun setting through the vapour. The second section moves to the story of the Napoleonic War ships in the middle and backgrounds of the painting using percussion. Reflecting this the section centres around the narrative of a naval battle; the manoeuvring into position and flexing of strength; the pre-battle planning; the calm before and finally the battle itself. The third section draws together two aspects: the sun setting and the prison ship, drawing us from the aftermath of the battle to the journey back to shore showing the juxtaposing emotions of the imagined victorious British (the piccolo) and French prisoners (the cello). Closer to shore the vapour descends and we hear inflections of the market before returning to the sun setting through the vapour with the harbour clock (Tubular Bells) grounding us in real time.

It's meant to be played in an upbeat and happy fashion, and the trumpet should be sexy and fun. It is reminiscent of an epic sci-fi story and depicts a group of space travelers flying into the void, a great expanse of mystery and nothingness. The piece begins with a preparation for adventure, and the journey is underway. Later, the travelers contemplate and reflect on their bold mission as they fly through a nebula, and the piece ends with a triumphant victory as they return from the adventure.Scored for 4 trumpets, 4 horns, four trombones (4th is bass trombone), tuba, timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal.

Ai lume delle stelle is a song of loss. By the light of the stars, Tirsi bemoans the loss of his beloved whose eyes were like flickering stars or torches flickering in the night. This setting is for an expanded ensemble of 8 players as follows: Part 1 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 1 Part 2 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 2 Part 3 in F/C/Bb/Eb - Horn/Euphonium/Trombone/Baritone Part 4 in C/Eb/Bb - Euphonium/Baritone/Trombone/Tuba/Eb Bass Part 5 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 3 Part 6 in Bb/F/Eb - Trumpet/Cornet/Horn Part 7 in C/F/Bb - Trombone/Horn/Euphonium Part 8 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones.
