When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733031). The Circus Bee is a circus march written by Henry Fillmore of Cincinnati, Ohio in February 1908. Because of its complexity and advanced writing, it is sometimes used as either an opener or an encore piece in band concerts. The Circus Bee was a celebration of sorts for the fact that Henry Fillmore and his father, who managed their publishing business in Cincinnati, finally agreed that the young composer could publish his music at home, even though it did not meet the elder Fillmore's standard of being religious music. It was during this period of conflict between father and son that Henry, showing defiance to his father for not repenting his desire to write marches, reportedly told him, I will huff and I will puff, and I will continue to write marches. This alleged statement by the younger Fillmore gave birth to one of his many composing pseudonyms, Will Huff. The march is named after an imaginary circus newspaper and reflects Fillmore's lifelong interest in circuses and his varied experiences while touring with five different big top shows where he played the trombone. He was also famous for his many trombone marches, such as Bones Trombone, Teddy Trombone and the famous Lassus Trombone, all showcasing the trombone glissando, or smear, caused by moving the trombone slide in and out while playing the instrument (usually loud).

Mapping which beat each string part falls on is helpful when starting to teach this piece. Platypus are shy in nature and do not normally cohabit in the same location in large numbers. This piece was written as the composer observed an unusually large number of Platypus in one location. The wind parts depict the Platypus as they surfaced and descended in the billabong where they lived and as they happened to meet another Platypus or come up where she was sitting they quickly retreated with a loud splash. This is heard throughout the piece.  Parts are available.
