This arrangement for vocalist and big band is written in the key of Ab major, and follows the form as sung by The Andrews Sisters. Parts are provided for solo vocalist as well as the three-part harmonisation for an Andrews Sisters styled group. All brass parts are written mostly in a comfortable range, although 1st Trumpet requires Eb6 and 1st Trombone a Cb5 but these sections could be played 8vab by less experienced players. 1st Alto Sax requires Clarinet double but an optional part without the doubling has also been included. On The Sunny Side Of The Street was composed in 1930 and was first heard in a Broadway revue which starred Harry Richman and Gertrude Lawrence. The first recordings also appeared in the same year, and it went on to be become a jazz standard, covered by Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Art Tatum amongst others. The final bars of this arrangement include a brief tribute to Count Basie, who also recorded the song. The singing needs to light and swinging, with good articulation to the words and accurate placement of the syncopated rhythms. Try to blend the voices so that they sound as one, and aim for a softer, crooning vocal tone, like The Ink Spots or The Andrews Sisters.

This lighthearted arrangement, which was made famous by the Andrews Sisters in the 1940s, is suitable for all ages for school and community. It is accessible for the intermediate level. With the key change, players need to focus on a smooth transition. Each member of the quartet (3 soprano clarinets & 1 bass clarinet) has an opportunity to play the melody during the piece. To perform the piece at the desired tempo, it may be helpful to begin at a slower tempo and work up to the faster tempo. The Polka should be fun to play and to listen to.

Here's Oktoberfest 101, a basic requirement for any polka band. It started out as a composition by a Czech composer, got new lyrics and new names in many languages (in Germany, where the Germans claim it as their own, it's called Rosamunde) and became wildly popular across the globe during World War II, after the Andrews Sisters made a hit of it in 1939.
