This lush, spacious piece for double choir is set to the text of the Cherubikon, the troparian normally sung at the Great Entrance in the Byzantine liturgy. It symbolically incorporates those present into the presence of the angels gathered around God's throne. Beautiful sonorities and a wide dynamic range paint the text.

Part of the Christmas Story is the shepherds tending their flocks by night.  This interesting composition creates the impression that the tenors and basses are the shepherds and the sopranos and altos are the angels as it describes the shepherds' journey to find the Christ Child.  Full of meaning and beautiful chording, it can easily be performed as a tenor/bass duet using soloists, with other tenors and basses joining in on the tutti sections.  The song has several key changes and is mostly in a minor key, except for one section when the angels sing.  It can be a real show piece for your tenors and basses, and lends itself to the dramatic acting out of the scenarios.  Performance time is @ 5-6 minutes.

Chosen of God, a virgin so fair
Was blessed from on high, a Son she would bear,
And call His name Jesus, for He was the One;
His life to offer, Thy will be done.
Angels came singing, sent from above
Declaring glad tidings, our Father’s love;
Shepherds and wise men would reverently bend
For Jesus was born, the Savior of men.

Women did come, their spices prepared;
Still grieving the loss of life thus not spared.
Then, finding the tomb with the stone rolled away

This piece was inspired by Job 38:4-7, which concludes with ...while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy. The intent of the composition is that of a joyful celebration, expressing the spirit of this scripture passage. The A-B-A- C-A form of the piece and the observing of the optional repeats will facilitate the learning process. Mallets are used in the C section, but no other special techniques are employed.
