His ‘Tagebuch’ consists of a series of short piano pieces, their key notes are based on a twelve-note series from Schönberg’s Suite for Piano Op. 25 and are reached via a series of permutations. ‘Just as one can, with a little imagination, see pictures in cloud formations, or discern human or animal shapes in rocks weathered by the wind and the rain, so the sounds inherent in any given material trigger associations. These then crystallise into an inspiration, a structure, a form, or a chord reminiscent of Beet-hoven, a motif by Stravinsky, a clausula by Dufay, a theme by Frescobaldi - the gradual shaping of an idea. The great store of existing material inspires the imagination and a certain joy of discovery, while the external limitations of pre-existing material provide the freedom for internal creative exploration. They were composed in honor of All Souls' Day and gained historical significance when they were performed at Beethoven's funeral and the dedication of his tombstone. The pieces are notable for being written for four trombones, a relatively uncommon ensemble, and have become a staple of the modern trombone repertoire. The Three Equali were first performed at Linz Cathedral on November 2, 1812, and two of them were played at Beethoven's funeral on March 29, 1827, alternating with choral arrangements by Ignaz Seyfried. The pieces are significant due to their historical associations and unique instrumentation.

Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heave�, “haul�, and “bound� away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.
