Here's a super swing chart for the younger player from arranger John Denton. From the MGM movie of the same name, this melody is well known to all ages. John has included a tenor solo with written solo provided and carefully kept the brass ranges and tempo quite reasonable keeping this chart accessible to this level. This setting of the 23rd Psalm drew its initial inspiration from the John Rutter setting. Taking a cue from Psalm 23, this piece features an ABA form and subtle text painting throughout. In the A sections, the voice and right hand or oboe follow each other in canon while the left hand or harp undulate gently underneath as a meadow in the breeze. The B section starts out dissonantly apprehensive but soon rises to a place of comfort and confidence before bubbling out in joy. The instrumental coda echoes the phrase The Lord is my shepherd from the beginning as a final affirmation.

While originally scored for tenor, this piece may be sung by a bass, baritone, alto/mezzo, or soprano. Three different ranges are available for purchase to accommodate different vocal ranges. This piece will present a good challenge for vocalists of all abilities since it has a low tessitura but a high range on brief passages.

These short Preludes for guitar are intended to illustrate a particular technical point or points. It may be either technical or compositional or both and I would have to say that I have been influenced by Tarrega’s Preludes which he wrote mostly for his students and so have called them Preludes rather than Studies. I learnt Tarrega’s pieces such as Adelita and Lagrima early in my study of the guitar and always enjoyed their nature as both technical exercises but also performance pieces. I have tried to emulate that with these pieces. 

This Prelude is based on the use of thirds and sixths on the guitar. These intervals are the easiest to play on guitar and the sweetest sounding though they can still be used dramatically as in this work. The middle section, or B section if you prefer, uses chords with dissonance built into the chord shape and which are also not too difficult to play.

Get your young jazz group really swinging this year with the great Count Basie standard JUMPIN' AT THE WOODSIDE. Paul Cook has masterfully arranged this terrific swing tune for young and less experienced musicians. Although ranges and rhythms have been successfully limited, this arrangement captures the vibrant feel of the original version as it was in the big band era.
