Fare Thee Well My Own True Love  Arranged for Intermediate/Advanced Guitar by Dan Jones  I chanced upon this beautiful melody under the title of ‘Irish Love Song’ in 2022. I quickly arranged it for solo guitar to add to my own repertoire. I then researched the correct title of the melody and found that the closest match was ‘Fare Thee Well My Own True Love’. The tune is in two distinct sections and the ‘B’ section has several variants. This one is lesser known, but I find it very melodic and poignant. The score is given in two versions, one with just notes, the second with notes and TAB.  Less-experienced players could consider playing just the first page which avoids the later higher positions, but still gives the piece in its entirety. Various versions of the tune have been recorded by a range of artists. The melody is also similar to that of the folk song The Leaving of Liverpool, also covered by artists as diverse as The Dubliners to The Pogues. A YouTube video of the arranger performing the song will be uploaded before the end of April 2023.

It opens with the infamous narration: ‘In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.’ The show revolves around four members of the fictitious United States Army Special Forces unit. These are the leader Colonel/Colonel John Hannibal Smith (played by George Peppard), smooth-talking Lieutenant Templeton Peck or Face (Dirk Benedict), pilot Captain H.M. Howling Mad Murdock (Dwight Schultz) and mechanic Sergeant First Class Bosco B.A. Baracus (Mr. T). The main theme was composed by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, although the version they created was not the same as the theme heard on-screen (which is what this arrangement is of). The theme has been ranked among the best TV themes every written. Interesting, the French version of the theme has lyrics that mirror the spoken description of the English version of the show. In 2010, 20th Century Fox released a feature film based on the series starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copley as the A-Team. Alan Silvestri composed the soundtrack. This arrangement of the Main Theme is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for piccolo trumpet, horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. It has been designed to work just as well for indoor performances as outdoor concerts. It also has the band parts reduced down to march-card size for use with a lyre as well as a music stand (making it ideal for events such as Durham Miners' Gala). A four-minute haunting duet for flute and harp.  Generally modal/melodic accessible music.  There are some more advanced rhtyhms and high passages in the flute, and Bach-like runs in the harp that will require practice for intermediate musicians.  The flute goes from low C to the B an octave above the treble cleff (but, only one 3-measure passage goes above the D above the treble cleff).The harp part can be played on a pedal harp or, with a little effort, on a lever harp.  It starts in two flats, there's a middle section with F#s (with time to switch levers - the sheet music indicates some bass notes that can be skipped to flip levers), and the end adds Ab (which will require two levers flipped by reaching over with the right hand - unusual, but not too awkward with practice).  The lowest note in the harp is the G below the bass cleff (however, all notes below the bass cleff are octave doublings and could be ignored on a smaller harp), and the highest is the D above the treble cleff.

The piece is a 1902 classic piano rag written by Scott Joplin and it was sold first as sheet music, and in the 1910s as piano rolls that would play on player pianos.The first recording was by blues and ragtime musicians, the Blue Boys in 1928, played on mandolin and guitar.Its structure is: Intro–AA–BB–A–CC–Intro2–DD.It is primarily set in the key of C major; however, for the C section (commonly referred to as the 'Trio'), it modulates to the subdominant, F major, then through a transitional passage modulates back to C major for the D section. The B section contains an indication that the melody is to be played an octave higher on the repeat.In the June 7, 1903, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, contemporary composer Monroe H. Rosenfeld described The Entertainer as the best and most euphonious of Joplin's compositions to that point. Pedaling all of the notes that are not staccato gives a more exciting effect, but it must be executed skillfully. If you want to pedal measures 18 and 20, you must be fast enough to change for each of the last four eighth notes. Do not slow down at the end of this piece!
