Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.956650

Composed by C M von Weber. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Holiday,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. 8 pages. C Melville-Mason #6505727. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956650).

March of the Hunters features in the opera Der Freischütz, which is possibly the best known work by the German Romantic composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786 – 1926).  The story is based on an old folk tale and tells of a marksman who, desperate to win the hand of the lady he loves in a shooting contest, obtains some magic bullets which cannot fail to hit their target.  One of these, however, is entirely under the control of the Devil…

This arrangement is for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either B-flat clarinet or bassoon.  Well within the scope of intermediate-level players, it can be used as a recital piece, as part of a programme of light background music at a wedding or function, or just enjoyed as general repertoire.

Arrangements of Simple Gifts has been sung at three US Presidential Inaugurations (1985, 1993 and 2009).

The Multi-level pieces were initially arranged in an A Version. When that was completed, it was then simplified to form the B Version.  The B Version has thinner lines and allows more time for placing the fingers. The purpose is to permit harpists of various playing levels to enjoy performing together.

In the key of D, the melody is divided evenly between parts. There are no pedal or lever changes. Dynamics are clearly marked. Shaker songs were quite often sung in rounds.

These info sheets teach guitarists how to play the B Melodic Minor scale using the technique known as two handed tapping (sounding the notes by a combination of hitting both your fretting, and picking, hands onto the fretboard). It teaches guitarists how to play a 3-octave B Melodic Minor scale, in both ascending and descending forms, as well as the various diatonic chords produced from both forms of the scale. Additionally, it features a mode/chord connection exercise, showing how the related modes are produced from the different scale forms. A brilliant resource for guitarists looking to extend their technical and theoretical vocabulary and enter the world of two handed tapping.

Some tunes just live forever, and students always love to play them. PINK PANTHER is a perfect example. Arranger Mike Lewis gives the less experienced jazz groups an opportunity to play this all-time favorite. A few triplet and swing figures, along with a lot of unison scoring, make this a natural for young jazz ensembles. Give this chart a look! Very Easy (3:04).

German • English • French.

Searching for an instrument which should fulfill the need for deep, powerful and at the same time sonorous flute tones, the ingenious flute maker Theobald Böhm created the first alto flute in 1858. Literature was needed for the new instrument, and therefore Böhm arranged the pieces mentioned above (originally, the Rossini pieces are meant for 2 voices and piano, Weber op. 3 was written for piano for four hands). Alternatively, the alto flute part can also be played by the violin, English horn or clarinet. The corresponding parts are also included.

About Pick-A-Part Arrangement

This arrangement system employs simultaneous, multi-level difficulty parts for each string section. The goal is to accommodate all levels of playing in the preparation and performance of a symphonic masterwork.

In this arrangement, there are 3 difficulty levels for each individual string section, labeled A, B, and C, respectively. Each level is a decreasing level of technical and musical difficulty, level A being the highest level of difficulty. The A level is close to, if not exactly the same as, the original string part, plus the integration of wind parts when applicable. B and C follow in a proportional reduction of difficulty level.

For this solution to be most effective, some students should be encouraged to play the most challenging parts simultaneously with those playing the simpler parts. This presents the opportunity to participate in a performance that includes most of the original material. The B and C parts cover enough of the surface material while maintaining a modicum of independence from the A part. In other words, the B and C parts are able to hold their own in performance without the A parts.

For example, let’s say you have a couple of talented violinists and a few more that are well below their playing level, only two violists that need a great deal of help, a plethora of cellists with a wide range of abilities, and one single bass player that is a beginner. Your distribution of parts may look something like this:

    • Violin 1 - two on Violin 1A, one on Violin 1C, and the rest on Violin 1B
    • Violin 2 - one on Violin 2B, the rest on Violin 2C
    • Viola - both on Viola C
    • Cello - three on Cello A, one on Cello B, and the rest on Cello C
    • Bass - one on Bass C

This potential setup will challenge each player at their current level of development while creating the context for a moving experience with a major orchestral work.

SKU: A0.1156067

Composed by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Christmas,Contest,Easter,Festival,Praise & Worship. 42 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #756379. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1156067).

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. His numerous choir anthems offer dramatic performance opportunities for church or the concert hall.  His festival anthem SATB choral anthem Lift Up Your Heads is an expressive and dramatic work enhanced with brass quartet accompaniment of two B-flat trumpets and two trombones with alternate F horn and treble clef euphonium parts provided for the trombone parts. The organ/piano part can be used for chorus preparation as well as additional support for performances if desired. However, not using the keyboard part in its entirety for a performance in addition to the brass group will create a more interesting interplay of different timbres. Conductors should ensure accompaniment parts don't overwhelm the chorus especially if the keyboard part is added with the brass. The recording is of the entire edition.

SKU: A0.565912

By Sharon Wilson. By Lowell Mason. Arranged by Sharon Wilson. Easter,Folk,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score and individual part. 7 pages. Sharon Wilson #6574783. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.565912).

The beloved hymn Nearer My God, to Thee by Lowell Mason is presented here as a flowing, peaceful instrumental duet (for BOWED PSALTERY solo with PIANO accompaniment). The PSALTERY part was designed for a beginning psaltery player and includes only 2 flats; Bâ™ below middle C and Bâ™ above middle C. The piano accompaniment is at the early-intermediate level.

To assist those new to reading music notation, two solo parts are included: one is the standard music notation and includes the lyrics for sing along enjoyment. The second solo part is identical to the standard music but instead of lyrics, the note names are provided below each note (example A, B, C…).

The PSALTERY plays the melody for the first verse and most of the second verse. There are a couple short phrases during the second verse where the PIANO plays the melody and the PSALTERY provides the harmony. The first verse is in the key of C major. For the second verse, the PIANO transitions up to the key of F major during a short interlude.

A piano accompaniment and/or rehearsal track (MP3 format) is available for this arrangement as a separate purchase: Nearer My God, to Thee (Piano Accompaniment Track for Easy Bowed Psaltery Solo).

The range of a typical soprano psaltery is two octaves beginning with the G above middle C (G4). However, since some psalteries have fewer than 25 strings, the range for this song is only 1-1/2 octaves. Also, the notes are written an octave lower on the staff so they are easier to read and learn for beginner musicians. The notated range for this song is G3 (first G below middle C) to D5 (second D above middle C).

The purchase price includes a combined score (grand staff, 3-stave) with both parts (PSALTERY and PIANO) on each page, plus 2 options for the 1-staff solo part (one with lyrics, one with alphabetic note names). The solo part could also be played by other instruments with the same range such as a violin.

SKU: A0.1335323

Composed by Kendra Brown. 21st Century. 26 pages. Kendra Brown #921147. Published by Kendra Brown (A0.1335323).

The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

This multi-movement brass choir arrangement adapted from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's orchestral Othello Suite, Op. 79 provides a technical and musical showpiece to highlight any performance. Four distinctive movements in this Suite include a driving Dance, melancholy Funeral March, languid Willow Song featuring a flugelhorn solo and a rousing Military March to conclude.  Every player gets an opportunity to shine and display not only their technical expertise but also their musicianship as well. The work is arranged for a brass choir of four B-trumpets with trumpet I doubling on piccolo B-flat trumpet and flugelhorn, 4 F horns, 3 trombones, euphonium and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.

Them Changes is a standout track by Thundercat, featuring a funky, bass-driven groove that highlights Thundercat's virtuosic bass playing and unique blend of jazz, funk, and R&B influences. The lyrics explore themes of heartbreak and emotional turmoil, delivered with Thundercat's signature falsetto vocals.

Kerry Marsh's vocal jazz arrangement begins with an a cappella rendition of the song's bridge, serving as a teaser before launching into the now-iconic drums and bass groove. A hallmark of neo-soul, the dissonance between the chord changes and the melody can present challenges for vocal harmonies. This arrangement skillfully navigates these tricky spots, employing octaves and unison writing to minimize clashes, and then breaking out into lush, dense harmonies where they are most effective.

The chart concludes with a space for vocal or instrumental improv, accompanied by vocal backgrounds, ending the piece in a sudden and unconventional manner. This modern-day classic will be a hit with your vocal jazz ensemble, offering something for singers, instrumentalists, and the audience alike to enjoy.

Perfect for advanced ensembles looking to explore contemporary jazz-funk, this arrangement captures the essence of Thundercat's innovative style while providing a fresh and exciting challenge. SKU: A0.549523

Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #3504679. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549523).

Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 9 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital or church meditation.

Grieg Background

In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic-era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.

Legacy

Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy), and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)

Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.

Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary

It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.
