This composition was commissioned by the duo of Liz Leehey (clarinet) and Sarah Tenney (marimba). They gave the premiere at Tufts University in a concert that included works funded by the American Composers' Forum. 
I enjoyed every moment of writing this piece because the sound of marimba as well as its interplay with the clarinet made me feel like the notes were dancing.

The composition of this three-movement 25-minute Concerto for Trumpet served as the composer’s culminating project for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts. The project was approved on 13 October 2005, and the piano reduction was premiered on 17 October 2006. The use of religious themes (fe, caridad, and esperanza—or faith, charity, and hope) for the movements’ titles and programmatic details surfaces from the composer’s religious and musical philosophies, presenting a profound musical commentary on the theological triad.

The Chants du Rhin (Songs of the Rhine), a cycle of six pieces, based on poems by Joseph Méry, were written in 1865, and Bizet performed two of them on 16 April 1866 at a soirée of the Beaujolais Philharmonic Society. The songs are grouped symmetrically around La bohémienne as the central piece, framed by two meditatively yearning pieces (in E and D flat major) and two vividly exuberant ones (similarly in E and D flat major), with L’aurore serving as an introduction.

In this cycle Bizet takes up the theme of the gypsy girl which had already entered European music in the operas The Bohemian Girl by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe and Verdi’s Il trovatore, as well as in Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano. Bizet will return to it one year later in La jolie fille de Perth and ten years later in Carmen. The fourth piece Les confidences shows similarities in tonality, structure and motifs to the middle part of the third movement of Chopin’s Sonata in B minor.

This version includes parts in B-flat treble clef as well as bass clef.

Tag Blues: from Rhapsody In Blue- for big band/jazz ensemble arranged by John Hoesly. Based on a theme from Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece.  Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet.  It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme.  In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune.  There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes.  Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles.  Lead Tpt G5.

I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter- music by Fred E. Ahlert and lyrics by Joe Young. Arrangement for Little Big Band/ Jazz Ensemble. Written in 1935 and one of the most recorded songs ever. It seemed to work in all genres. Rock, Swing, Pop…on and on. Recorded by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Barry Manilow, Willie Nelson, Bill Haley and His Comets, Fats Waller and Count Basie. Even Paul McCartney.

This arrangement is in the style of Basie’s LIL’ DARLIN’…a slow burn. Relaxed, but full of energy. Difficulty: Intermediate. A standard of the Great American Songbook.

Little Big Band- The arrangement is playable with rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass, drums)and 3 to 6 horns. Horns in order of importance: 1st Trumpet (1st Part), Alto Saxophone (2nd Part), Trombone (3rd Part), Tenor Saxophone (4th Part), Baritone Saxophone (5th Part), 2nd Trumpet (6th Part). Includes an optional Vibraphone/Guitar part and alternate parts for the Baritone Saxophone (Trombone), the 2nd Trumpet (Alto Saxophone), and the Trombone (Tenor Saxophone).
