The work was premiered in May 2023.I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an ABA form, unisons, and duet textures. The Score has written a Drum Set part, but I had two students playing the music (one student for the snare, the other for the bass drum). This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method. Grade: 0.5.

The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet.There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores.The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “Vårt land� (Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including Vårt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after Vårt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia� (the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem. Published by Daniel Hay Music (A0.596425). When composing this solo piece the composer, Daniel Hay was thinking of massive troll-like creatures ponderously stomping around a bonfire. Perhaps the image is better if you think of drunk sumo fighters dancing around rising flames. Most of the time when the composer uses repeats he labels them with an uppercase letter to identify them, followed by a hyphen and a lowercase letter showing where the repeat leads. Occasionally, as in The Dance of the Stone Trolls, there is also a lowercase letter within parentheses which is used to indicate an optional location to repeat from either at the first pass or possibly as a second pass. The attached YouTube link is performed on Tenor Recorder by the composer during a rehearsal. This version is wonderful with Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, or Soprano, and Tenor Recorders.

The Living Tree was written by Catherine Feeney and Nikki Lamborn of the band Never the Bride, who recorded the song for their 2002 album Surprise. It was a Top 40 hit for Shirley Bassey in 2007. Feeney and Lamborn invited Bassey to record the song; they had left a copy of their recording at her gym in Monaco with a note saying they knew it was a song for her. This arrangement was made for Him Hayes, (aka Johnny Midnight) Solo Cornettist for The Scottish Co-operative Band.

The Hawkeye is a program piece for Concert Bands, coming in at a grade 4, with heavy keyboard percussion.  This work chronicles the Spaceship Hawkeye on her first voyage from Earth, heading into the stars for the first time and her initial confrontation with danger.  The music reflects the impending confrontation with a subtle switch in harmony during the first sight of space.  The ship will come away unscathed, and set off for her first adventure.  This piece was written in loving memory of the composers father, George Hugh Bailey, Jr., who was tragically taken in a car accident in 2009.  He was an avid fan of science fiction and space operas. His support and love throughout the years will never be forgotten, and this piece honors him with his own theme to his own ship.
