The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. My Brother Sylvest' also known as Big Strong Man, is an American song, but often performed by English folk singers and Irish bands.My Brudda Sylvest' was written in 1908, words by Jesse Lasky and Sam Stern, music by Fred Fisher.The song is written in an Italian-American dialect about the singer's eponymous brother, described in hyperbolic terms as a man of legendary strength capable of extraordinary feats. The original lyric has him blowing out a house fire, pushing the ocean away to allow him to walk to Italy, killing fifty thousand [native American] Indians, and drinking the ocean dry.Subsequent versions changed the references from the boxer John L. Sullivan to the Jeffries-Johnson fight of 1910, to American boxer Jack Dempsey, who started boxing in 1914, and even to John Conteh of Great Britain, who fought in the 1970s. Other changes have included the saving of the RMS Lusitania, sunk during the first World War, and swimming from New York to Italy, drinking all the water in the sea, playing every instrument in a brass band in a visit to Japan.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808696). We Gather Together is one of the best known Thanksgiving hymns. It originated in the Netherlands in 1597 as Wilt Heden Nu Treden, written by Adrianus Valerius to commemorate a victory in the Dutch war of liberation from Spanish oppression. It was first published in Valerius’ 1626 collection of Dutch folks songs, Nederlandtsche Gedenck-Clanck. In 1877, the Austrian composer and conductor, Eduard Kremser, published arrangements for six songs from Valerius’ collection, one of which was Wilt Heden Nu Treden. Seven years later, American musicologist Theodore Baker wrote a modern English version of the hymn. It is Baker’s words and Kremser’s melody that are today sung as We Gather Together.    This arrangement consists of six versions of the Kremser tune. The first is a fairly straightforward melody-and-harmony rendition, except that Trumpet 1 begins solo, and the other instruments join the playing group one at a time. Succeeding versions consist of variations, until the final, which, for the four upper instruments, reverts to a simple statement of melody-plus-harmony. Tuba, on the other hand, has a wonderful running bass part. The piece ends with a brief diminuendo and ritardando repetition of the last four measures. The key signature changes twice: C to D and back to C. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. As for high notes: Trumpet 1 plays one quarter-note A above its staff; Trombone has two high-F eighth-notes.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 55 seconds. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1093770).      The dictionary defines revel as “a time or instance of carefree fun.� The verb tipple refers to the imbibing of spirits. A tippler is one who drinks beer, wine, whiskey or other such spirituous liquids. So a tipplers revel would be a gathering of folks who, in the words of Dolly Parton’s “Two Doors Down,� are “laughing and drinking and having a party.�      This Tipplers Revel is a compilation of traditional drinking songs. It begins and ends with that bane of school trips, faculty sponsors, bus drivers and chaperones, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.� And between those two bookends come “Rye Whiskey,� “Little Brown Jug,� “Landlord, Fill the Flowing Bowl,� “Jimmy Crack Corn,� “Beer, Beer, Beer (An Ode to Charlie Mops, The Man Who Invented Beer),� “Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,� “Wein, Weib und Gesang [Wine, Woman, and Song],� “Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes,� “There Is a Tavern in the Town,� “Good Night, Ladies,� “How Dry I Am,� and brief quotes from about a half dozen other melodies associated with quaffing.      For the most part, this arrangement’s time signature is 4/4 and should be played at about 120 BPM. There are, however, two sections of 3/4 time, one of which is marked “tempo di valse,� and the opening and ending few measures should be played rather slowly.      The music should be well within the normal range of the group. Possible exceptions: trumpets play their A above the staff a couple of times.      There are quite a few 16th notes in the allegro sections. (And one could make the argument that at least two sections ought to have been written in 6/8 time. But they weren’t.)      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 6 minutes, 43 seconds. Two versions of the prelude are included so that the prelude can be followed smoothly by a piece in either a C pentascale or a G pentascale if the entire suite is not being used. Excellent for students learning through an intervallic method. Pieces only use 2nds and 3rds. Most pieces use a quarter note as the smallest note value, while some pieces have eighth notes in a repetitive pattern to help them learn the pattern. Works well for students using Piano Safari to provide supplemental pieces appropriate from the end of Level 1 through very early Level 2. Purchase of this PDF includes a studio license to use the suite with any of your students.

Two’s Company uses only 2 fingers on each hand. Bar None has a regular beat, but no time signature or bar lines. What’s My Ledger Line uses only one staff, but depends on ledger lines to cover the missing staff. Fancy Footwork uses all 3 pedals.Times Two alternates 3/4 and 6/8 measures. I ‘C’ You is written in alto clef. Multi-Tasking adds rhythms (tapping, clapping, etc.). And It’s All Over takes an easy tune and jumps all over the keyboard with it.
