I transcribed Contrapunctus I from the Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, faithfully respecting the work of the Great Maestro, intervening only to distribute the voices when impracticable by the individual instruments and to give some breathing space to the various performers. In fact, from 4 parts, I obtained 5 using a small doubling only in the final part.

The choice to use 3 trumpets and 2 trombones, and not the more typical brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba), was dictated by the lineup I had available at the time I made the transcription. Luckily, the second trombone part fits perfectly with the original fourth voice (…except for one very brief point…).

However, in the future, I don't rule out creating a version for the standard quintet too!

On a didactic level, the choice of this piece was certainly ambitious, but the extraordinary thing is that through Bach's music (!!!) it was possible to address an enormous amount of musical nuances. This immediately fascinated my students, both young and old, who did not hesitate to get involved with all their strength and I must say that, at the end of the study path, each of them achieved a clear improvement both technically and, above all, expressive.

But then it's no surprise, Bach's music is always extraordinary and surprising!

The structure of the transcription is therefore the original one and the duration is around 2 minutes and 45 seconds. To the expected parts I also added that of the horn in F, replacing the 3rd trumpet. At your discretion, of course, decide whether to replace it or double it directly.

Also in this case, the audio is made with the synthetic sounds of midi, therefore not particularly captivating, but it should still be useful for getting an idea of ??the arrangement and for studying the individual parts.

This is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers.  

Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part.

The audio sample plays the full score.

This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet!  With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune.

Problem solved!

With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style.

With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard.

All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement.

These Are Soulful Days is a jazz standard by Cal Massey.
On this 1973 date, organist Don Patterson and guitarist Pat Martino again show themselves to be equally at home with gritty, organ combo sounds and the more refined vocabulary of hard bop. Brothers Jimmy Heath (tenor sax) and Albert Heath (drums) round out the band. They are bop-oriented players who also have an affinity for the Patterson and Martino blend of brains and barbecue sauce.
The quartet comes together nicely on all five tracks, beginning with the long, melodic line of Cal Massey's mid-tempo title track.
Pat Martino's solo and comping are presented here. The theme is omitted for copyright reasons.

Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The work is in the form of a Cavatina and Cabaletta, a vocal aria form used in Bel Canto operas during the life of Demersseman. In this form, a slow, expressive and ornamented melody (the cavatina), usually with solo cadenzas is followed by a faster, usually more dramatic but equally florid section (the cabaletta). Famous examples of this form include the aria Una voce poco fa in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Casta diva ... Ah! bello a me ritorno in Bellini‘s, Norma. It is important to listen to vocal performances in this style, especially in performing the solo cadenzas, which (in spite of the notation) are not necessarily meant to be performed as virtuoso effects., but rather as a means of displaying expression and beautiful tone. The piano part, obviously written to be quickly readable for a conservatory accompanist, has been modified to provide a fuller sound for the concert hall. If the work is used for examinations, these doublings may be changed back to single notes, if desired. Other dynamics, articulations, and expressive marks, absent in the first edition, have been added.
