Lyrically, the song is an anti-establishment protest song, similarly to previous Muse single Compliance; however, in contrast to the gaslighting nature of the previous single attempting to convince the listener that the oppressor is the one in the right, the lyrics of Will of the People are from the perspective of the victim, calling for direct action to be taken against the oppressor. The song is intended to be a populist parody, almost the antithesis to 'Uprising', another Muse song with a similar anti-establishment theme that instead [takes] it seriously..

The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song recalling the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government troops after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Sir Harold Boulton, 2nd Baronet composed the lyrics to an air collected by Anne Campbelle MacLeod in the 1870s, and the line Over the Sea to Skye is now a cornerstone of the tourism industry on the Isle of Skye.

♫ These claims of Jesus Christ are very much like a series of portraits of a person. Instead of calling “The Claims of the Son� a cantata, the composer chose the term “polyptych� [pu LIP tich]. A polyptych is a work of art consisting of 4 or more pieces or panels, that together create a single presentation. [A diptych is divided into 2 sections, a triptych into 3 sections etc.]
