Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 21 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3001087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533505).

The concert waltz Adieu begins with an introduction in the style of a Bel Canto aria. The Valse which follows is divided into several sections of contrasting styles and tonalites. The coda brings the piece to a calm and quiet close which is broken by a final fortissimo outburst.

One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that he
converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

“Loc-tee-kun-tzin: air chinoise et Rondo. Souvenirs de la Chine starts with a setting of the Chinese folksong « Loc-tee-kun-tzin », one of eight used by Pucinni in his opera Turandot but set in a completely different harmonic context here. The Rondo which follows is in the form of a valse with several scherzando passages and an brillant code. The folksong is briefly reprised before the concise ending

This fantasy begins with motifs from the 1st act chorus « Sempre Felc’Amina » ». The Count’s first act aria « Vi ravisso, o loughi ameni » is followed by an extended cadenza and leads to Amina and Elvino’s first act duo « Prendi l’amel ti dono ». Amina’s second act aria « Ah non guige! » is presented with a brilliant variation to bring the work to a close.

«неМой CruiSe» op. 36 for violin and piano - a modern work of the young Belarusian composer Nikita Beltiukov, which was written in 2019 during wanderings on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean. The piece has two parts, so unusual for works of this kind. Part I, Andantino ritmico ad lib. - has a very impulsive character. Rhythmic triplet at the piano pass through almost the entire work, thereby recalling the constant movement of the floating ship along the waves. The violin's part is quite virtuoso and requires the performer to keep the rhythm as accurate as possible. Part II, Ad libitum poco rubatissimo - is the desire of the performers for complete freedom. The mastery of all kinds of violin sound techniques, combined with a versatile vibrato and mysterious pauses at the piano, makes this work truly interesting, unusual and intriguing for the listener.

God Defend New Zealand - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas Coull

God Defend New Zealand
was first performed in Dunedin's Queen's Theatre on Christmas Day, 1876.  Played by the Royal Artillery Band and sung by the Lydia Howard Burlesque and Opera Burle Troupe, the patriotic song found immediate favour with the Dunedin public.

The words, a poem written by Thomas Bracken in the 1870s, was first published in a competition run by The Saturday Advertiser and New Zealand Literary Miscellany.  The competition was to compose a 'National Air' based on five verses of Bracken's poem, and appeared in the Advertiser on 1 July, 1876 listing a grand prize of 10 guineas.  On 9 September the Advertiser reported that 12 completed entries had been received.  Several weeks later on the 21 October the winning entry by John Joseph Woods, a school teacher from Lawrence, was announced.

The popularity of God Defend New Zealand grew throughout the 19th century and entered the 20th century as one of the most popular songs.  In 1935-39 with the help of John McDermott, chief engineer of the NZ Post Office, and others God Defend New Zealand was made New Zealand's national song in time for the 1940 Centennial celebrations.

In 1976, almost 100 years after the first public performance, a petition calling for God Defend New Zealand to become the national anthem of New Zealand, organised in Dunedin by Gareth Henry Latta and others, was presented to the Petitions Committee of Parliament with 7750 signatures.  With the permission of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Government adopted God Defend New Zealand as the countries national anthem.

Traditionally God Defend New Zealand is performed in G major, but as this can often be rather high for amateur voices, the anthem is also presented here in F major.

This arrangement of Brazil is written as performed by famous piano artist, Liberace.  This is the same version that he performed on his emmy-award winning TV. show and in concerts around the world.

Aquarela do Brasil (Portuguese: [akwaˈɾɛlÉ du bɾaˈziw], 'Watercolor of Brazil'), written by Ary Barroso in 1939 and known in the English-speaking world simply as Brazil, is one of the most famous Brazilian songs.

Ary Barroso wrote Aquarela do Brasil in early 1939, when he was prevented from leaving his home one rainy night due to a heavy storm. Its title, a reference to watercolor painting, is a clear reference to the rain. He also wrote Três lágrimas (Three Teardrops) on that same night, before the rain ended.

Describing the song in an interview to Marisa Lira, of the newspaper Diário de Notícias, Barroso said that he wanted to free the samba away from the tragedies of life, of the sensual scenario already so explored. According to the composer, he felt all the greatness, the value and the wealth of our land, reliving the tradition of the national panels.

Władziu Valentino Liberace (May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987) was an American pianist, singer, and actor.  A child prodigy born in Wisconsin to parents of Italian and Polish origin, he enjoyed a career spanning four decades of concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. At the height of his fame from the 1950s to 1970s, he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world!

Lyrics:

Brazil, where hearts were entertaining June
We stood beneath an amber moon
And softly murmured Someday soon
We kissed and clung together

Then, tomorrow was another day
The morning found me miles away
With still a million things to say
Now, when twilight dims the skies above
Recalling thrills of our love
There's one thing I'm certain of
Return, I will, to old Brazil

Then, tomorrow was another day
The morning found me miles away
With still a million things to say
Now, when twilight dims the sky above
Recalling thrills of our love
There's one thing that I'm certain of
Return, I will, to old Brazil
That old Brazil
Man, it's old in Brazil

Composed by John Gibson. Contemporary. 17 pages. JB Linear #3459833. Published by JB Linear (A0.581937).

Extinction Events (4th movement - Yaguaretê* Surprise) by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players. This is the fourth movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, and Walrus Jump. The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top. *(Yaguartë = Argentine Jaguar)

Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.

The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved.

Argentine Jaguars (Yaguareté) are experiencing shrinking habitats due to human population growth and cutting of forests. In this piece I imagined a Jaguar slowly stalking its prey, moving silently on velvet paws. She moves carefully but with barely hidden energy, pausing, then freezing, then suddenly pouncing. Surprise! Sadly, the Dies Irae music plays on.

Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Zellev. 19th Century,Christmas,Classical,Romantic Period,Wedding. Score and part. 22 pages. Zellev Music #868187. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1276462).

The Three Romances for Oboe and Piano, Op. 94 (German: Drei Romanzen) is a composition by Robert Schumann, his only composition for oboe. It was composed in December 1849. The work consists of three short pieces in A-B-A form, and it was written during what was speculated to be one of Schumann's manic episodes.

An average full performance lasts roughly 12 minutes.

The Romances were written in December 1849, one of the most productive years of Schumann's entire career. Previously that year, Schumann had written two other works for wind instruments and piano: the Adagio and Allegro, op. 70, for French Horn and piano, and the Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, op. 73. According to Schumann himself, the pieces were written on December 7, 11, and 12th in Dresden., Unlike many other oboes, works at the time, the pieces were not the result of a commission by a prominent soloist of the day. Schumann gave the pieces to his wife Clara Schumann, whom he once described as his own right hand, as a Christmas present, calling them his hundredth opusculum. Schumann's mental health was quickly deteriorating during the time of the pieces' writing; shortly afterward, he moved from Dresden to Düsseldorf, where he was admitted to and eventually died in an asylum.

On November 2, 1850, the pieces were first performed privately as a piano and violin piece with Clara Schumann on piano and François Schubert on violin. The works were first performed several years after Schumann's death, in 1863; the performances took place on January 24 and February 14 in the Gewandhaus, featuring Emilius Lund on oboe and Carl Reinecke on piano.

The piece was dedicated to Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski. The original edition was published by N. Simrock. The publication date is unknown, but it is estimated to have been anywhere from December 1850 to February 1851. Nikolaus Simrock wrote a letter to Schumann on November 19, 1850, asking whether or not Schumann would agree if we were to print on the title page: 'for oboe and pianoforte' and on this with a violin 'for violin and pianoforte' and on the third 'for clarinet and pianoforte,' since it is not looked upon with favor when several instruments appear on the title page. However, Schumann denied the request, replying, If I had originally written the work for violin or clarinet, it would have become a completely different piece. I regret not being able to comply with your wishes, but I can do no other. Two copies of the original printing exist Schumann's copy and Wasielewski's dedication copy (both either in museums or private collections).

Disobeying Schumann's wishes, Simrock published alternate violin and oboe parts in the first edition. In her compilation of Robert's works post-mortem, Clara only included the violin transcription, possibly due to her only playing the piece with violinists. There have been several recordings of the music, including a recent one along with other Schumann oboe works by Oboe Classics. The romances are now a standard part of the oboe repertoire and often considered the best piece of romantic repertoire for the oboe.

This score album contains seven typical Sephardic songs from the 15th century. They have been preserved to our days thanks to the work of transmission between generations of the Jewish people living outside the Spanish borders. With different thematic, happy, about weddings but also sad and melancholic, these songs transport us to another time. The piano offers the possibility of recalling these melodies with the elegance of the instrument and the possibility to increase and amplify the beauty of the sounds with our current modern instruments.

Program note:

There is a famous photograph that Ruth Orkin took of a young American girl strolling in a street in Florence surrounded by ogling Italian men catcalling. She blithely went on her way, completely ignoring them***. It is such an iconic photo that I was inspired to write my 19th string quartet in honor of Miss Orkin's photograph.

After some research I discovered that the girl in the photograph has a made-up name of Jinx Allen. Her real name is Ninalee Craig. Ruth Orkin befriended this young American compatriot and ended shooting a ton of photographs of her in that city.

I decided that these exquisite photographs would become the titles of the movements for the string quartet.

I. American Girl in Italy
II. Jinx in Goggles
III. Jinx @ AMEX
IV. Treasure Tours
V. Jinx Staring
VI. Jinx with Statue

From a Wikipedia entry on Jinx Allen: Many interpret the photograph as one of harassment and chauvinism. In 2014, Ninalee Craig said: At no time was I unhappy or harassed in Europe. The photograph is not a symbol of harassment. It's a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time! She has also noted that Italian men are very appreciative, and it's nice to be appreciated. I wasn't the least bit offended..
