Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533667 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533667). Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic. The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo. The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section. This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section. The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments, emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl. Small Ensemble Cello,Clarinet,Flute,Piano Accompaniment,Vibraphone,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533618 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 36 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3031747. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533618). Dark December: Ignis Dei (2002) was commissioned by Maurice and Amy Katz and was written forand is dedicated to Non Sequitur. It is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano, andis subtitled “processional doubles for mixed sextet.†(The word “doubles†is used in the old sense of“variations.â€)The source material for the composition is the composer's original hymn tune DOLMEN CREEK(2002), whose text by Margaret Clarkson (Burn in Me, Fire of God) provides the Ignis Dei of thetitle and poetic conception. The poetic conception is one of an emergence of a single inner flame, amida dark landscape. The tune is never heard in its full or straightforward form – instead it is always heard in fragment ortransformation. Its formal structure also provides the dimensions and structures of the four sections.Formally, the work is cast in a single movement as a series of three processionals plus a finalglorification-postlude. The conception of the work is ritualistic in tone, and pushes forward towardsthe end.The opening processional (for the entire sextet) is very slow and distant and sets out transformations ofthe hymn tune in its most abstruse form. The second processional (for violin, cello, and vibraphone) isslightly faster and features an active and independent vibraphone part over a cortege in the two strings. The third processional (for flute, clarinet, and piano) is quick and nimble as gestures and material arepassed between the two winds, and the piano provides commentary and allusions. In this processional, afragment of the hymn is heard in its most clear form. The final glorification-postlude brings the entireensemble together again in a vibrant coda of busy activity.Carson

A Difficult Miracle (2010), Mountain Songs of the Spirit, for soprano, baritone, chorus, and instruments, was commissioned by the First Unitarian Society in Newton, Massachusetts and is dedicated to director of music Anne Watson Born and the FUSN choir. The poems, written by American poet Elizabeth Kirschner, are filled with mountain imagery, and the woodwind instrumental scoring for the work was chosen for its evocation of traditional folk music. The music is essentially contemplative and personal in its exploration of the surrender of the spirit to the mountain landscape. This is the full score. Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.775977 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Standards. Score and individual part. 44 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2034877. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775977). Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano (2012) was written for violinist Warren Davidson and pianist Donna Amato, superb musicians for whose advocacy on behalf of my music I am very grateful. The first movement, Canto, is an extended song that develops through a variety of textures. The second movement, Lamento, is a fierce lament in the tradition of an old Irish caoine. The thirdmovement, Variazioni, is structured as two presentations of the theme surrounding five free variations. The theme serves both as the basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structural template. Each variation also contains material referring back specifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory. The first variation is fast and limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The third variation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifth variation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowly regains its declamatory nature before an intense coda ends the work.
