The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha
Program Notes

Low Flute Ensemble

The Impossible Dream (The Quest) is the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical Man of La Mancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name.  The song was composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics written by Joe Darion.  It was awarded the Contemporary Classics Award from the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.

This arrangement for Low Flute Ensemble can be performed with as few as 5 players or a full flute choir with multiple players on a part.  It is scored for 3 alto flutes, 2 bass flutes, and optional contrabass flute.

I have always found the lyrics of The Impossible Dream extremely moving:

To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest,
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.

To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march
Into hell for a heavenly cause.

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will be peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To fight the unbeatable foe.
To reach the unreachable star.

Quintet for Bassoon and Strings (2005–08) was commissioned by The Commission Project
and is dedicated to Klaus Heymann, in tribute for his invigoration of the classical recording
industry and his enthusiastic support for the composers of our time.
The original conception for the work was devised during an extremely foggy week on
Nantucket Island, Massachusetts in the summer of 2005. It is music deeply connected to the
ocean landscape. Throughout the work, the strings often present a fog-like backdrop,
through which the bassoon’s color emerges like a lighthouse beacon—lyrical and flexible.
The work opens with a series of interlocking, nebulous figurations in the strings that
gradually build in intensity. The bassoon unfolds the work’s basic melodic material in a free
solo that also increases in intensity. At the point of climax, the tempo suddenly slows
dramatically, and a tender, lyrical cantilena emerges. As this music dissolves, a bouncy and
energetic music takes the foreground. It climaxes in a bassoon cadenza. Though the bassoon
has played the leader throughout, this is the first time it is heard unaccompanied. A brief,
but vigorous afterglow recalls the opening of the work. The final section emerges out of it: a
series of high, distant harmonics (perhaps harbor buoys) in the strings through which the
bassoon sings a final song.

Piano Concerto (2005) for solo piano and strings was commissioned by Nathaniel Blume and
Symphonic Underground. The work was written in celebration of the Mozart Year 2006.
Unlike most recent piano concerti, this work is a concerto designed for small performing
forces. It sits between typical chamber music and the typical piano concerto.
The work was inspired by the various Mozart concerti (such as K. 449) which are often
performed with very small string sections. Thus, this concerto may be performed with as few
as single strings on each part, or a larger full string orchestra
The work is cast in one movement, containing two large sections (sub-movements).
Structurally, the piece is a highly condensed version of Classical period symphonic form.
The first section of the work is an exposition-development/sonata allegro combined with a
slow movement. The second section is a combination of a triple-meter scherzo and a rondo
finale.
The musical material throughout derives tonally from the three notes of a D-major triad (D,
F#, and A). Those three pitches serve as transformation centers for the work's material and
also plot the tonal areas of each section. The musical material of the work thus ranges from
highly Classical melodies (although all original) and textures to more Romantic and
modernist elements that transform out of the initial material.

Too Upset for Words (2003) for alto saxophone, guitar, and piano was commissioned by and
is dedicated to Aris Carastathis and the Lakehead University New Music Ensemble.
The work is cast in two very short movements that use the same basic musical material. The
work contrasts lyrical gestures with ones of extreme violence -- all derived from the same
musical sources.
The first movement, Rages, continually brings back a loud piano crash. Out of the harmonics
of this sound come the saxophone and guitar's material.
The second movement, Reflections, freely explores some of the gestures of the first
movement. The pitches of the musical ideas become deconstructed -- existing only as pitch
entities in a free section.  All players play from the same score, hence in purchasing this file, you have the right to print three copies.
