This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (23 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a String Orchestra. In 1993, Frances Rauscher, et al, published a study in which they attributed a temporary improvement (of around 15 minutes) in mental tasks such as those found in IQ tests... Now, my criticism goes further: the piece in question is the Allegro con spirito from Sonata for two pianos in D minor KV. 448 by Mozart, so far so good. If we look at the original score, Mozart does not mention pianos, nor their ancestor, the fortepiano, but clavicembalos, i.e. harpsichords. In modern music, the A4 is tuned to 440 Hz and the scale is divided into 12 semitones of identical distance between each of them, causing that the only pure interval between them is the octave and that the others are impure and cause unpleasant interferences. In past centuries, other temperaments were used to tune the scales, with more pure, harmonic intervals, without interferences, although the intervals between semitones were some larger than others, which is why there are compositions in different tones, because according to the temperament it provoked different sensations, but with the modern equal temperament that's part of the past... the equal temperament killed the harmony and the colors of the music as its composers imagined it, as they heard it. What's this all about? to which I have recorded the piece of the supposed Mozart Effect approaching what Mozart had in mind: with two harpsichords, both with the A4 tuned to 421.6 hz, according to the Steiner tuning fork, used at the time of composition of the piece in Vienna, (note: it's not enough to tune the A4 but also to tune the intervals), and tuned in the Kirnberger III temperament. Some intervals may seem out of tune to modern ears, but it is one of so many historical temperaments used in those times.

Keiron Anderson brings us music for the moment, and perhaps no other moment yet in the 21st Century has revealed the vulnerable nature of humanity, and the interconnectedness of our world more than the COVID-19 pandemic, officially announced on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization.  The True Heroes is a piece that tells a part of the dramatic story of the struggles, heartaches and triumphs of the world’s medical professionals, and all who were a part of the health care industry to whom this piece is dedicated.  Using a dissonance in the chords, structured upon two perfect fifths a semi-tone apart, Anderson opens the story with suddenness and a pushed tempo that conveys an urgency and anxiety about the growing pandemic, and depicts how the health care workers are not people with super-powers, but rather individuals who are committed to self-sacrifice in using their skills to save the lives of others. The crisis is not over as we reach the middle of the piece where the tempo slows to a more thoughtful pace, allowing the health care worker (and the listener) a moment to rest, to reflect and to meditate, and to give enough time for the emotions to mend and energy to rebuild while the pandemic rages on around them.  Then the music once again resumes its original pace with growing fanfare for the health care worker and their resilience in the face of a momentous task, leading to a more dramatic and triumphal sound and force to conclude the piece.

Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by �Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg� to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. Hear 30 second clip, beginning at measure 1.  Arrangement about 1 min 30 secs performance time.  This arrangement has a surprise ending, so the title needs to be just Angels.  The chords bring wonderful emotions which climax at m 52, followed by the surprise ending, the heart-swell.  Could be done by YWIH, high school age girls or Women's Choruses.  Use for shows, but not for Competition.  Some churches might allow it for Mother's Day services.  Feedback would be appreciated.  After thinking about ANGELS, I HAVE TO TELL YOU the most important line in the song.  After the Daddy tells the child what angels are, he says, They call them angels in Heaven (beautiful spot in the son), but we call them MOTHERS down here.  Such a tear-jerker, I think!!

The minor triads of C#, D# and G# all have white keys immediately above and below the chords. The Major triads of C and G have black keys immediately ABOVE the lowest and BELOW the highest notes. These two elements, along with the Major triads on the three sharp-key chords, have been combined into a haunting and ethereal setting, with the left-hand accompaniment stating these shapes, and the melody in the treble taking its cue from the scale implied by the chords below. Octaves, triplets, and 16ths are all part of the swirling mist of melody that surrounds the highly stable and uniform accompaniment. Each measure begins with the low octave on the root, and jumps up to state the shape being used, using dom 7ths to transition to the next sound and shape. Chopin and Liszt did not share many musical values, but they DID both utilize the shape and particular formations of various keys to suit their expressive needs. And, so we salute them both here, in this first of three pieces using this time-honored tradition of pianistic, yet evocative composition. MBB.

These three pieces are to mimic studies of voicing and touch through lyrical forms. Each specific BPM marking in the tempo is intentionally preceded with ossia rather than ca.. This is to emphasize complete tempo freedom for the performer. The BPM markings are simply given as an initial baseline, showing the general tempo that the composer would perform these pieces at. Neither of the three pieces finish with a triad. Instead, they end with some form of extended harmony, whether it be through a chord or arpeggio. Neither the specific meaning of the piece nor the method to play the piece is included in the piece descriptions following this sentence, as those choices are specific to the performer. Nocturne in A Major (Op. 1 No. 1) uses both contemporary and traditional harmonic concepts, with add9 chords and extended harmonies integrating further color into the piece. Much material of Winter Landscapes in E-Flat Minor (Op. 1 No. 2) is built upon a simple four-note motif (in regards to scale degrees, the motif follows the pattern of 1-7-2-1). To note - this piece never resolves to the traditional E-Flat minor triad. Lastly, Tribute in D major (Op. 1 No. 3), similar to the other two pieces (of the Op. 1 set), uses multiple forms of extended harmonies through chords and arpeggios, such as add9 and dominant thirteenth harmony.

In the popular recording of this song Ellis uses his musicianship to change the melody slightly each verse as well as include expressive and elaborate vocal runs in numerous places through out the song. My aim was to write the melody omitting these vocal flourishes which are not as suitable for a corporate worship setting.
