This composition is a premiere, speculative, yet as faithful as possible embodiment of all of Beethoven’s sketches for his String Quintet in C major, Hess 41 (WoO 62), as they have been left by the composer. The usefulness and integrity of more or less hypothetical completions of sketches by great composers remains from case to case controversial. Due to the paucity of the sketches for the aim of attempting a true reconstruction, the present composition in no way falls within such category. It is obviously quite different from what Beethoven himself would have produced if he had lived more, also due to the fact that he usually transformed his preliminary sketches substantially during the compositional process. However, there are some of his frequent, subtle thematic relationships between the sketches for the Quintet movements, and probably some features in the sketches would have been kept in the completed composition. The four-movement design hypothesized by Martin Staehelin and others, as well as other retrospective or relaxed features in the sketches may be a result of a still early stage of the compositional process, or perhaps an indicator of a fourth, neoclassical creative period, together with Op. 135 and the new Finale for Op. 130.To generate a continuity draft of the Quintet, all of Beethoven’s sketches for it were used, with the addition of several ones from the same context within the respective sketchbook and which could be related to the identified Quintet sketches: some sketches are clearly labeled as being for the Quintet, while others are thematically related or written down close to them. With the possible exception of bars 75-94 and 136-155 in movement II (which are variations on the theme) and bars 140-145 in movement IV (which fill in the blank bars in the sketch with a progression based on it), virtually every bar of this composition includes the notes from the sketches in at least one of the instruments. Some of those notes were subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal design, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and duration in the sketches.This publication includes the score, parts and continuity draft, the latter being marked with the sources in the sketches for each passage.Total duration: 33 minutes. Gordon Mizzi has made guitar transcriptions of these five dances and this is the first time that they are being published. The Branles de Malte by Adrian Le Roy are also included. There are a number of original compositions. Saints and Fireworks, a piece in two movements, vividly represents Malta's village festas. Island Scenes are six musical portraits of towns and villages dotting the landscape of Malta.They include Valletta- Barrakka Gardens, San Giljan-After the Feast, Mdina- Citt+á Notabile, the dreamy Comino-The Blue Lagoon, Sliema- The Tower, and the pulsatingly brash Paceville -Sin City. Three Love Poems : Hula, Lahaina and Hana are influences from Hawaii. In 1949, Miles Davis organized the recording of twelve arrangements for the Capitol label, including the composition Boplicity. The composition, popularized with the lyric Bebop Lives by the late, great Mark Murphy,  was originally recorded by: Miles Davis (trumpet), Mike Zwerin (trombone), Bill Barber (tuba), Junior Collins (French horn), Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone), Lee Konitz (alto saxophone), John Lewis (piano), Al McKibbon (bass), and Max Roach (drums). This new treatment maintains the cool flavor of the tune/arrangement, but is scored for jazz voice (could be doubled at the octave by an additional singer) with fully notated syllables. Unlike the original arrangement, neither tuba nor horn are required. Instead, the conventional instrumentation consists of flugelhorn (or trumpet - no mutes), alto sax, trombone, vibraphone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Exciting twists include a multi-meter bridge section, which weaves in and out of 3/4. Improv section with backgrounds and room for multiple soloists. Changes are in all parts. Composer Kenneth Morris heard a train station porter singing the song while traveling from Kansas City to Chicago in 1940. The music became so prominent in his mind that Morris exited his train and took a different train back to the previous station to ask the porter to sing it again. Morris wrote down the music and lyrics and had the song published. The song soon became a standard in both the gospel and jazz genres and has since been recorded by numerous artists. The original author or composer is unknown. This arrangement for clarinet quintet is closely based on Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of the song which was featured on her 1967 album, “Brighten the Corner.� Ella’s voice is represented in the Clarinet 1 part which has been transcribed exactly as she sung. There is also a simplified Clarinet 1 part which is easier to read and allows the soloist more freedom to embellish as desired. The accompanying parts are the background vocals and upright bass, with the light piano riffs in the E♭ Clarinet part. The E♭ part may be omitted for an easier quartet version. The biggest challenge in this arrangement is the balance as the solo is often in the lower register of the clarinet (below the break).
